Morris Brown College Celebrates Historic 'Restoration Class' with 92 Graduates Since Reaccreditation

Morris Brown College Celebrates Historic

Morris Brown College is marking a transformative milestone in its storied history as 92 students prepare to graduate this spring as the institution's first "Restoration Class" since regaining accreditation in 2022.

The historic commencement ceremony represents a powerful narrative of resilience and second chances—both for the Atlanta-based HBCU and its students. After losing accreditation in 2002, Morris Brown fought for two decades to restore its status, finally achieving reaccreditation 20 years later and ushering in a new era for the institution.

Key Milestone: The 92 spring graduates represent Morris Brown College's first cohort to complete their degrees since the institution regained accreditation in 2022, marking a pivotal moment in the HBCU's comeback story.

Among the graduating seniors is Faith Shamley, an Atlanta native whose personal journey mirrors the college's own resurrection. After stepping away from higher education in 2019, Shamley took what she calls "a leap of faith" by enrolling at Morris Brown in 2022—becoming one of the first students to join the institution after reaccreditation.

"I always say that my experience at Morris Brown has been life-changing," Shamley told WSB-TV.

Shamley's decision to attend Morris Brown also honors her family legacy, as her grandfather attended the institution years ago. Now, she will complete her undergraduate journey with an impressive 3.9 GPA and acceptance to Columbia University's graduate program for nonprofit management.

What Makes This Class Different

The intimate campus environment fostered by Morris Brown's rebuilding phase has created unique opportunities for student-faculty relationships.

According to Shamley, the close-knit community means students interact directly with leadership at the highest levels.

"The president knows me by name; he knows all the other students by name. You're not going to get that at any other college. So, it's just a really, really special place to be," Shamley explained.

Dr. Kevin James, president of Morris Brown College, emphasized the significance of this graduating class for the institution's future trajectory. Acknowledging Shamley as one of the pioneering students who enrolled immediately after reaccreditation, James celebrated the academic excellence demonstrated by the Restoration Class.

"We are excited about the student success here at Morris Brown. This is what a resurgence and a comeback look like," James said.

Long-Term Implications

Morris Brown's successful reaccreditation and first graduating class serve as an inspiring blueprint for other HBCUs facing accreditation challenges. The institution's two-decade fight to restore its status demonstrates the determination and resilience that define the HBCU community.

As Morris Brown continues its journey toward reclaiming its position within the Atlanta University Center, this inaugural class of post-reaccreditation graduates represents more than academic achievement—they embody the institution's renewed promise and commitment to educational excellence.

The Restoration Class will leave a lasting legacy as the students who believed in Morris Brown during its critical rebuilding phase, proving that faith in the institution's mission can yield transformational results for both students and the broader HBCU landscape.
