Howard University Alum Karen S. Carter Makes History as First Black Woman CEO of Major U.S. Chemical Company
Posted By: Will Moss on April 15, 2026

Karen S. Carter, a proud graduate of Howard University, is set to make history as she assumes the role of Chief Executive Officer at Dow, one of the world's largest chemical manufacturers and a Fortune 500 company. Effective July 1, Carter will become the first Black woman to lead a major U.S. chemical company, marking a significant milestone in corporate America.

Historic Achievement: Carter joins an exceptionally small group of Black women leading Fortune 500 companies. While a record 55 women currently hold CEO roles at Fortune 500 companies, only two are Black women.

The appointment represents the culmination of more than three decades of distinguished service at Dow, where Carter has risen through the ranks to demonstrate exceptional leadership and strategic vision. Currently serving as Chief Operating Officer, she has been instrumental in overseeing business and operational performance across company lines while strengthening customer engagement and accelerating innovation.

Richard David, Dow's independent lead director, expressed confidence in Carter's ability to guide the company forward.

"She is a disciplined, highly respected leader with a deep understanding of Dow's businesses and customers. This appointment reflects our confidence in her ability to lead Dow forward into its next chapter of growth and value creation for customers, employees and shareholders."

Carter will succeed Jim Fitterling, who will transition to the role of Executive Chair.

Her extensive experience includes serving as president of Dow's Packaging & Specialty Plastics, the company's largest operating segment, where she demonstrated the strategic acumen and operational excellence that positioned her for this historic appointment.

A Vision for the Future

In accepting the role, Carter emphasized her commitment to continuing Dow's trajectory of innovation and performance excellence. "Dow has extraordinary people, world-class assets and leading positions in the markets we serve," Carter stated. "Our focus remains unwavering: delivering reliable and innovative solutions for our customers, and long-term value for our employees and our shareholders, while accelerating our transformation to set a new competitive standard for best-in-class performance."

Carter expressed enthusiasm about her continued partnership with Fitterling in his new role and her commitment to working with Dow's board and team members to advance the company's strategic priorities.

HBCU Excellence: Carter's achievement underscores the caliber of leadership developed at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Her bachelor's degree from Howard University provided the foundation for a career that has broken barriers and set new standards in corporate America.

Carter's ascension to CEO serves as an inspiring example for current and future HBCU students, demonstrating that the education and values cultivated at institutions like Howard University can lead to the highest levels of corporate leadership. Her historic appointment not only represents personal achievement but also reflects the continued impact of HBCU graduates in transforming the business landscape and creating pathways for the next generation of diverse leaders.
