Posted By: Will Moss on April 24, 2026 As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, it's time to celebrate a powerful truth: the Southwestern Athletic Conference has been producing NFL legends since before many of today's fans were born. This isn't just about numbers—though the numbers are impressive—it's about a century-old pipeline that has fundamentally changed professional football. Key Takeaway: Of the 506 former SWAC players who made it to the NFL, 303 were drafted, including 21 first-round selections. An incredible 14 former SWAC players have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Greatest of All TimeWhen discussing SWAC's NFL impact, the conversation must begin with Jerry Rice, widely considered the greatest player the game has ever seen. The Mississippi Valley State star dominated from 1981-1984 as the centerpiece of Hall of Fame coach Archie Cooley's "Satellite Express" offense. Alongside quarterback Willie "Satellite" Totten, Rice rewrote the FCS record book with marks that still stand today, including 168.2 receiving yards per game in 1984 and 27 receiving touchdowns that same season. Selected 16th overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 1985, Rice's 19-year NFL career was nothing short of spectacular. His résumé includes three Super Bowl championships, 13 Pro Bowl selections, 10 First Team All-Pro honors, and two Offensive Player of the Year awards. He still holds nearly every receiving record, including career receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. SWAC Quarterbacks Who Made HistorySteve "Air" McNair of Alcorn State had perhaps the most storied college career of any SWAC player. The four-time SWAC Player of the Year won the Walter Payton Award in 1994 after throwing for a then-record 4,863 passing yards and 44 touchdowns. He finished third in Heisman voting—the highest finish by an FCS player in the award's history at that time. Selected third overall in the 1995 NFL Draft, McNair compiled 31,304 passing yards and 174 touchdowns while posting a 91-62 record as a starter. In 2003, he became the second HBCU player to win NFL MVP, sharing the honor with Peyton Manning. Doug Williams of Grambling State made his own history, becoming the first Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl. In Super Bowl XXII, Williams led the Washington Redskins to a 42-10 victory over Denver, throwing for a then-Super Bowl record 340 yards and four touchdowns while earning game MVP honors. Defensive DominanceSouthern University produced multiple defensive legends, including Mel Blount, who starred for Pittsburgh's Steel Curtain defense from 1970-1983. In 1975, Blount became the first HBCU player to win Defensive Player of the Year, helping the Steelers win four Super Bowls in the 1970s. Texas Southern's Michael Strahan amassed 141.5 career sacks with the New York Giants, including 22.5 in 2001—a single-season record that stood until 2025. The Next GenerationToday, 19 former SWAC players are on active NFL rosters. Travis Hunter, who made history as the highest-rated recruit ever for an HBCU program when he committed to Jackson State in 2021, was selected second overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2025 NFL Draft—the highest selection ever for a SWAC player. His teammate Shedeur Sanders became the Cleveland Browns' first Pro Bowl quarterback since 2007 during his rookie season. As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, the SWAC's legacy of excellence continues, with another generation ready to add their names to this remarkable tradition of greatness.
