Jackson State Alum Kevin Coleman Jr. Selected by Miami Dolphins in NFL Draft

Jackson State Alum Kevin Coleman Jr. Selected by Miami Dolphins in NFL Draft
Posted By: Will Moss on April 26, 2026

The Miami Dolphins selected Kevin Coleman Jr. in the fifth round of the NFL Draft with the No. 177 overall pick, bringing a well-traveled wide receiver and return specialist to South Florida. While Coleman finished his college career at Missouri, his football journey began at Jackson State University, where he helped elevate HBCU football on the national stage.

Key Takeaway: Kevin Coleman Jr. was one of the biggest recruiting wins of the Deion Sanders era at Jackson State, proving that blue-chip offensive talent was willing to bet on an HBCU program with national attention and NFL pedigree.

Building His Foundation at Jackson State

Before his journey through Power Five programs, Coleman arrived in Jackson, Mississippi, as a four-star prospect from St. Louis in 2022. His commitment to Jackson State was a major statement, demonstrating that top-tier recruits were willing to choose an HBCU program with championship aspirations and NFL credibility under Coach Prime.

Coleman made an immediate impact as a freshman, becoming one of Shedeur Sanders' reliable targets.

During Jackson State's dominant 12-1 season, Coleman posted impressive numbers:

  • 33 receptions for 510 yards
  • Three touchdowns
  • Helped lead the Tigers to a SWAC championship and Celebration Bowl appearance

His breakout performance came on HBCU football's biggest stage. In the 2022 Celebration Bowl against North Carolina Central, Coleman hauled in seven catches for 137 yards and a touchdown, showcasing his talent against elite HBCU competition.

A Winding Road to the NFL

After his freshman season at Jackson State, Coleman's path took him through multiple programs. He transferred to Louisville before landing at Mississippi State, where his production soared. His 74 receptions in 2024 ranked fourth in a single season in Bulldogs history, while his 932 receiving yards ranked fifth.

Coleman finished his college career at Missouri, where he led the Tigers with 66 receptions and 732 receiving yards in 2025.

What He Brings to Miami

The Dolphins are getting a proven playmaker with experience across multiple offensive systems. Coleman brings route versatility and return-game value, having demonstrated his ability to adjust and produce at Jackson State, Louisville, Mississippi State, and Missouri.

For the HBCU community, Coleman's NFL selection serves as another reminder of the impact and reach of the Deion Sanders era at Jackson State. While he may have finished his college career elsewhere, his foundation was built catching passes from Shedeur Sanders and helping push HBCU football further into the national conversation.
