Posted By: Sariya Lowery-Matthews on May 01, 2026 I chose to attend an HBCU because it represents more than just education to me, it represents legacy, culture, and purpose. Growing up, I saw firsthand the impact of HBCUs through my mom, who attended Lane College and Tennessee State University. Her journey showed me the strength, pride, and opportunity that come from these institutions, and it inspired me to follow a similar path. My own journey started at Nashville State Community College, where I built my foundation and pushed through challenges to stay focused on my goals. Coming from a community college has taught me discipline, resilience, and how to make the most out of every opportunity. Now, transitioning to an HBCU feels like stepping into a space where I can elevate everything I’ve been working toward. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with Senator Charlane Oliver, which has played a big role in shaping my interest in law and public service. Being involved in that environment showed me how powerful advocacy and leadership can be, and it made me realize that I want a career where I can make a real impact in my community. Attending an HBCU will connect me with mentors, professionals, and networks that align with those goals. Overall, attending an HBCU will help me grow not just academically, but personally and professionally. It will give me the support, connections, and cultural foundation I need to succeed in law and continue building on the work I’ve already started.
