FAMU and Howard Softball Set for NCAA Tournament Battles Against Power Conference Giants

FAMU and Howard Softball Set for NCAA Tournament Battles Against Power Conference Giants
Posted By: Will Moss on May 11, 2026

Two HBCU softball champions are preparing for challenging matchups as they head into the NCAA Division I tournament this Friday, representing their conferences with pride and determination on college softball's biggest stage.

Florida A&M, fresh off their first-ever SWAC softball championship, will take on No. 2 seed Florida in Gainesville, while Howard University, the reigning MEAC champions, face a rematch with No. 3 seed Duke in Durham.

Key Takeaway: Both HBCU conference champions earned their spots in the NCAA tournament through dominant championship performances and now face top-seeded Power Five opponents in regional play.

FAMU Makes History with Dramatic SWAC Title

The Rattlers captured their first SWAC softball championship in program history with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Southern. The championship game came down to a dramatic finish, as Braxtyn Battle delivered a walk-off single to secure the historic title for Florida A&M.

Now the Rattlers will test themselves against the Gators on the SEC Network at 11 AM on Friday, May 15.

Howard Repeats as MEAC Champions

The Bison made it back-to-back conference championships with a dominant performance in Saturday's title game, defeating South Carolina State 11-2 in five innings. Howard's convincing victory showcased the program's continued excellence and earned them another shot at NCAA tournament success.

However, the Bison are familiar with their first-round opponent. Last year, Howard faced Duke in the Durham regional opener and fell 12-0. This year's rematch provides an opportunity for redemption as the programs meet again on Friday.

Tournament Details

Both HBCU representatives will be in action on Friday, May 15 with television coverage for each game:

  • Howard vs. Duke: 12 PM EST on ACC Network
  • Florida A&M vs. Florida: 11 AM EST on SEC Network

The matchups represent significant challenges for both HBCU programs, as they face highly-seeded opponents from Power Five conferences. However, both teams enter the tournament with momentum from their conference championship victories and the determination to compete at the highest level of collegiate softball.
