While Antoine Fuqua’s Michael is dominating the box office with its electrifying, stadium-level concert recreations and a star-making, uncanny physical performance by Jaafar Jackson, critics and film purists are widely crowning Ryan Coogler’s Sinners as the superior cinematic achievement.Backed by the Michael Jackson estate, Michael delivers a high-energy, deeply nostalgic rush that leaves audiences dancing in the aisles, but it has faced heavy criticism for being a frictionless, sanitized biopic that glosses over its subject’s complex history in favor of pure hagiography.
