Historic Milestone: Shaw University's women's basketball program will be led by a woman for the first time in school history when Ebony Tanner takes over in 2026-27. In a statement released by the university, Tanner expressed her enthusiasm about the opportunity to return to Shaw, where she previously served on the coaching staff. I am incredibly excited and honored to return to Shaw University. Shaw is a place rich in tradition, excellence, and pride, and being a Lady Bear means representing something bigger than yourself. The legacy built by the women and coaches before us is special, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue that tradition while pouring into the next generation of Lady Bears. A Proven Track RecordTanner brings extensive coaching experience to her new role, including a previous four-season stint at Shaw as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During that time, she was part of the coaching staff that captured the 2008 CIAA championship. Her coaching resume also includes assistant positions at the University of Hartford and her alma mater, the University of Richmond. Most recently, Tanner spent two seasons leading the program at Elizabeth City State. She also previously guided St. Augustine's University to a winning record before the school ceased athletic operations amid a financial crisis. Distinguished Playing CareerBefore her coaching career, Tanner was a standout player for the Richmond Lady Spiders. Her collegiate achievements include:
