Shaw University Makes History: Ebony Tanner Named First Woman Head Coach of Women
Posted By: Will Moss on May 19, 2026

In a historic moment for Shaw University, the institution has appointed Ebony Tanner as the new head coach of the women's basketball program, making her the first woman to lead the Lady Bears in the program's history. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the Division II HBCU, whose women's basketball team has been exclusively coached by men since its inception.

Tanner, who most recently served as head coach at Elizabeth City State University, will take the reins beginning in the 2026-27 season.

Historic Milestone: Shaw University's women's basketball program will be led by a woman for the first time in school history when Ebony Tanner takes over in 2026-27.

In a statement released by the university, Tanner expressed her enthusiasm about the opportunity to return to Shaw, where she previously served on the coaching staff.

I am incredibly excited and honored to return to Shaw University. Shaw is a place rich in tradition, excellence, and pride, and being a Lady Bear means representing something bigger than yourself. The legacy built by the women and coaches before us is special, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue that tradition while pouring into the next generation of Lady Bears.

I can't wait to get to work and represent this university, our alumni, and our community with passion and pride.

A Proven Track Record

Tanner brings extensive coaching experience to her new role, including a previous four-season stint at Shaw as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During that time, she was part of the coaching staff that captured the 2008 CIAA championship.

Her coaching resume also includes assistant positions at the University of Hartford and her alma mater, the University of Richmond. Most recently, Tanner spent two seasons leading the program at Elizabeth City State. She also previously guided St. Augustine's University to a winning record before the school ceased athletic operations amid a financial crisis.

Distinguished Playing Career

Before her coaching career, Tanner was a standout player for the Richmond Lady Spiders. Her collegiate achievements include:

  • Two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection
  • Ranked among program leaders in points
  • Ranked among program leaders in rebounds
  • Ranked among program leaders in blocked shots
  • Ranked among program leaders in field goal percentage

Tanner replaces interim coach Lou Hamilton, who was let go after serving as interim. Hamilton had replaced legendary coach Jacques Curtis just days before the 2025-26 season began, following Curtis's sudden retirement.
