Posted By: Will Moss on June 09, 2026 One of HBCU football's most storied rivalries is getting a prestigious new venue for 2026. Tennessee State University announced Monday morning that the John A. Merritt Classic against Jackson State will take place at Vanderbilt University's FirstBank Stadium on Saturday, August 29. The venue change was necessitated by a scheduling conflict with the Tennessee Titans preseason game against the Chicago Bears at Nissan Stadium that same weekend, forcing organizers to find an alternate location for the historic matchup. Key Takeaway: The rivalry game returns to Vanderbilt's campus for the first time in over four decades, honoring legendary coach John Merritt at a venue where he achieved tremendous success.
Tigers athletic director Mikki Allen expressed enthusiasm about the location change, which carries special significance for the Tennessee State program. We are excited to bring the John A. Merritt Classic to FirstBank Stadium and honor Coach John Merritt's legacy at a venue where he enjoyed tremendous success. We appreciate the partnership of Vanderbilt University and the Tennessee Titans in helping make this special event possible for our student-athletes, alumni and fans. A Historic Venue with Deep ConnectionsThe choice of FirstBank Stadium holds special meaning for Tennessee State. Coach John Merritt compiled an impressive 14-4-1 record on Vanderbilt's campus, including a memorable 20-3 victory over defending FCS champion Florida A&M on October 20, 1979, at what was then known as Dudley Field. Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor for University Affairs and Athletic Director Candice Lee welcomed the opportunity to host the classic rivalry game. Coach Merritt led many memorable victories at Dudley Field, making it especially meaningful to welcome this game and TSU back to campus. We are proud to support an event that celebrates Coach Merritt's legacy and the rich tradition of HBCU football, and we look forward to welcoming Tennessee State and Jackson State fans for what promises to be a special evening. Rivalry History at VanderbiltThis will mark the fourth meeting between these SWAC rivals on Vanderbilt's campus. The previous matchups produced memorable results:
Tennessee State holds a 30-23-2 advantage in the all-time series between these historic programs. The 2026 contest will be the first time the teams have met in Nashville since November 17, 2001, when Tennessee State dominated with a 64-33 victory. Originally reported by HBCU Sports.
