Nationwide Competition: Sneakerhead of State on ePLC to Discover the Next Generation of Footwear Talent
|
Posted By: P C on June 15, 2026 Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design (PLC Detroit), Michigan’s only HBCU and the nation’s only design-focused HBCU, has partnered with NIKE, Inc., to launch Sneakerhead of State, a nationwide competition designed to discover, develop, and elevate the next generation of footwear talent through culture, community, and design. Launching June 15, 2026, Sneakerhead of State addresses a growing challenge within the footwear industry: while sneaker culture continues to thrive in communities across America, access to footwear design education, mentorship, and industry visibility remains limited for many aspiring creatives. Created as a national call-to-action, the competition looks to help bridge that gap by connecting emerging talent with opportunities to develop their skills, gain professional feedback, and engage directly with industry leaders. The competition invites footwear designers, footwear makers, and footwear customizers from across the United States to showcase their talents through original creations, crafted footwear, and customized designs that demonstrate problem-solving, consumer insight, storytelling, and a deep commitment to the design craft. “I know firsthand what it feels like to love sneakers and know what it takes to get into the industry. That's why Sneakerhead of State matters,” said Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, president of Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design. “Somewhere in America, there's a creative with extraordinary talent who simply needs an opportunity to be seen. This competition is about finding those individuals and helping them take the next step from sneakerhead to footwear professional.” Throughout the competition, participants will engage in live demonstrations, designer sessions, question-and-answer forums, and feedback opportunities designed to strengthen their skills while building community among emerging footwear creatives nationwide. Through a national voting process, the Top 50 Sneakerheads of State will be selected to advance in the competition. The field will then be narrowed to 10 finalists before three national finalists are selected. The Top 3 finalists will receive an exclusive three-day experience at PLC Detroit, where they will refine their designs, present their work to industry professionals, and engage directly with the NIKE Talent Acquisition Team. Finalists will also gain access to select experiences during the National Black Footwear Forum at PLC Detroit, one of the industry’s leading gatherings dedicated to advancing diversity and opportunity in footwear. By connecting emerging talent with industry leaders, mentorship opportunities, and career visibility, the competition seeks to transform passion for sneaker culture into meaningful pathways toward careers in footwear design. More than a competition, Sneakerhead of State represents a national talent discovery platform designed to uncover creative potential in communities where access to design education and industry exposure may be limited. By combining culture, community, and design, the initiative creates new opportunities for aspiring footwear creatives to gain visibility, build skills, and connect with the professionals shaping the future of the industry. Additional information about eligibility requirements, submission guidelines, voting procedures, and competition details will be released when the competition officially launches on June 15 at https://eplc.plcdetroit.com/courses/SNKR-H...
