2026 Land Rover Defender 110 X-Dynamic SE Review

2026 Land Rover Defender 110 X-Dynamic SE Review
Posted By: Randi Payton on June 23, 2026

The 2026 Land Rover Defender 110 remains one of the most distinctive luxury SUVs on the market. After spending time behind the wheel of the X-Dynamic SE model on urban streets throughout the District and suburban Maryland and Virginia, as well as longer highway stretches along the Capital Beltway and I-95, the Defender continues to impress with its unique blend of rugged capability, luxury, and commanding presence.

The first thing I noticed was its elevated driving position, which gave me a commanding view of traffic. Despite its boxy shape and large size, the Defender feels smaller than it looks because of its responsive steering, surround-view camera system, and suite of driver-assistance tech. On D.C.'s pothole-filled streets and uneven pavement, the electronic air suspension on the Defender smoothly absorbed large potholes. The ride was firm, and the vehicle stayed connected to the road on all pavement types. Around town, the Defender’s design drew attention wherever it went. Its upright stance, short overhangs, and distinctive silhouette set it apart from the crowd of luxury SUVs.

A Legacy of Adventure
This striking vehicle has deep roots in the legendary 75-year history of the Land Rover brand, dating back to the original 1948 Land Rover Series I, a tough, Jeep-inspired utility vehicle that became a global symbol for exploration. Officially called the "Defender" in 1990 to distinguish it from newer models, the classic lineup ended a nearly seven-decade manufacturing run in 2016. Over the years, the brand evolved through various corporate periods, transitioning from the British Rover Company, British Leyland, and the Rover Group to German engineering investments under BMW, quality manufacturing improvements under Ford, and finally to its current home with Tata Motors (Jaguar Land Rover) in 2008. This long journey culminated in the vehicle's successful return in 2020, reviving the Defender nameplate by combining its historic, go-anywhere spirit with modern luxury and safety.

Performance/Power
On the highway, the inline-six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine, which produces 395 horsepower, offered smooth coasting and quick acceleration. Merging onto Interstate 495 or passing slower traffic on I-95 requires minimal effort. The eight-speed automatic transmission shifted smoothly, and highway cruising remained exceptionally quiet. Wind noise was minimal, and the cabin stayed silent even at higher speeds. For those wanting more power, a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine is available, providing up to 518 horsepower.

For 2026, the Defender received its first major refresh since the current generation was introduced in the 2020 model year. This year’s updates include redesigned LED headlight graphics, revised front fascia and grille details, flush-mounted taillights, a larger 13.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display, more driver-assist features, and an OCTA Black performance version. The bigger infotainment screen is a welcome addition, offering better visibility and quicker operation.

Models/Pricing
The four-door Defender 110 has two rows and is available in four main trim levels.
• Defender 110 S: $65,450
• X-Dynamic SE: $77,200
• Defender 110 X: $95,600
• Defender 110 V8: Starts at $115,350 MSRP and generates 493 horsepower.

Limited-edition models include the 625-horsepower Octa 4.4-liter eight-cylinder, Octa Black, and the Trophy Edition with special badging and design.

Fuel Economy
The EPA estimates the six-cylinder Defender 110 at 17 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

The 2026 Land Rover Defender 110 X-Dynamic SE remains one of the most compelling luxury SUVs on the market today. Few vehicles combine such unique styling, real capability, luxury features, and daily usability into one package. The Defender is no longer just a utility vehicle; it has transformed into a modern luxury icon while still honoring the adventurous spirit that has defined the nameplate for over 75 years.
