Virginia Union University Center for African American History and Culture Unveils “Unfinished Declaration” Inspired by Frederick Douglass’ Fourth of July Address Virginia Union University’s Center for African American History and Culture hosted the unveiling of Unfinished Declaration, a commemorative work by Richmond artist Haywood Watkins III inspired by Frederick Douglass’ landmark 1852 address, “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” The event was held in the L. Douglas Wilder Library and Learning Resource Center and brought together university leaders, community members, artists, and guests to reflect on the nation’s founding ideals, the legacy of slavery, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
