VUU Host Ruth Harris Coles Institute Luncheon Honoring Leaders

Virginia Union University’s Sydney Lewis School of Business will host the Ruth Harris Coles Institute Luncheon on Sept. 26, 2026, recognizing leaders whose work reflects excellence in entrepreneurship, education, business leadership and community service. This year’s honorees include Jean Patterson Boone, founder and immediate past publisher of the Richmond Free Press. Boone co-founded the newspaper with her late husband, Raymond Boone Sr., and has also served as an adjunct professor of education at Virginia Commonwealth University. Richard Waller Jr. will also be honored. Waller began assisting his father at age 7 at Waller & Co., a family-owned jewelry business founded in 1900. The company is one of Richmond’s oldest Black-owned businesses and remains a significant part of the city’s entrepreneurial history.
