Neighborly advice leads tech worker to commission into the Army Reserve as a major
Posted By: Andre Diaz on July 29, 2026 From Tech to Tactical: An Unconventional Path to ServiceWhen Andrew Barisser, a machine learning engineer at Meta, watched devastating floods ravage Kerrville, Texas in July 2025, he experienced a profound shift in perspective. The disaster, which claimed over 130 lives including children at a summer camp, left Barisser feeling like a "passive bystander" rather than someone actively contributing to his community's resilience. That realization set in motion an unexpected career pivot. The father of four, who had previously served in the Peace Corps during his twenties, found himself seeking a new way to serve. The answer came from an unlikely source: his neighbor, Lt. Gen. Miles Brown, acting commander of the Army Transformation and Training Command. Direct Commission: A Fast Track for Specialized TalentBrown introduced Barisser to the Army's direct commissioning program, an initiative designed to recruit civilians with specialized expertise—particularly in technology—directly into the officer ranks. On July 29, 2026, Barisser was commissioned into the Army Reserve at the rank of major during a ceremony at T2COM's Austin headquarters. The direct commission pathway represents a small but strategically important recruitment channel. Of the 7,300 officers the Army commissioned this year, only 75 received direct commissions. However, recent reforms have dramatically streamlined the process, cutting it from over a year to less than six months. This efficiency is crucial for attracting candidates with in-demand skills who might otherwise be deterred by bureaucratic delays. Bringing Silicon Valley Expertise to Army OperationsBarisser's assignment to the Army Software Factory in Austin positions him at the intersection of military needs and technological innovation. Col. Jason Zuniga, the factory's director, emphasized that the facility's success depends on merging industry experience with the knowledge of career soldiers. "Part of what the Army Software Factory is trying to do is bring industry best practices into our software operations," Zuniga explained. Recent projects include digitizing jump records for the 18th Airborne Corps, replacing manual logs with a system that improves both efficiency and visibility into soldiers' training levels. Service Rooted in Family ValuesBarisser's wife, Crystal, whom he met during their Peace Corps service, fully supported the decision. She recognized that her husband needed work aligned with deeper purpose rather than just financial compensation. "I don't want him to get to the end of his life and have regrets," she said. For Barisser, the commitment extends beyond personal fulfillment—it's about modeling values for his children. "I do not believe that responsibility lies with some other people over there," he said. "It lies with us regular people who choose to become active participants in preserving our society." This article is based on reporting by Stars and Stripes.
