Jackson State Mourns Loss of Defensive Back Levi Wyatt
|
Posted By: Roger Gates on August 02, 2026 Jackson State University is grieving the loss of former defensive back Levi Wyatt, who passed away from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, the school announced on Saturday. Wyatt’s tragic passing has sent shockwaves through Tiger Nation and the broader HBCU football community. Wyatt, who spent the 2025 season with the Tigers, made meaningful contributions on both defense and special teams as Jackson State captured the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division championship. His dedication and work ethic helped propel the Tigers to one of their most successful seasons in recent memory. By the Numbers: Wyatt appeared in all 12 games during the 2025 season, recording 12 tackles with nine solo stops and four pass breakups for the Tigers.
Before joining Jackson State, Wyatt established himself as a standout performer at McNeese State. In 2024, he earned second-team All-Southland Conference honors and was named to the Phil Steele All-Southland Conference team. That season, he played in 12 games and recorded 33 tackles, including 23 solo stops, two tackles for loss, and eight pass breakups. Wyatt’s collegiate journey also included a sophomore campaign in 2023, when he appeared in 10 games and tallied 13 tackles after transferring from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. His roots in Mississippi ran deep — he began his high school career at Vicksburg High School before finishing at Holmes County Central High School. Key Takeaway: Levi Wyatt was a versatile defender who consistently contributed throughout his collegiate career, earning conference recognition and helping Jackson State win a division championship in his final season.
The Jackson State football program released a heartfelt statement honoring Wyatt’s memory and the impact he made on his teammates and coaches: The bond of this brotherhood does not end when the game clock expires. Today, we mourn the loss of our brother, Levi Wyatt. His memory will forever live within the halls of Jackson State football and in the hearts of everyone who shared this journey with him. We ask the Tiger Nation to join us in lifting his family and loved ones in prayer during this incredibly difficult time. Rest easy, Tiger. Why It Matters: This tragedy reminds the HBCU community of the strong bonds forged on our campuses and the lasting impact student-athletes have on their teams, schools, and communities. Tiger Nation stands united in honoring Wyatt’s memory and supporting his loved ones.
As the Jackson State family and the entire HBCU community process this devastating loss, prayers and condolences continue to pour in for Wyatt’s family, teammates, and all who knew him. His legacy as a Tiger will endure in the hearts of those he touched both on and off the field. Originally reported by HBCU Sports.
