Virginia Union University Professor and Student Join the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Research Cruise Across the Atlantic RICHMOND, VA – Virginia Union University is representing aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research cruise, as Dr. Francis E. Mensah, chair and associate professor of Natural Sciences, and Kingston Blackburn, a Physics and Engineering major and Science Engineering Summer Institute student, participate in ocean and atmospheric research across the Atlantic. Mensah and Blackburn traveled from Richmond to New York, then to Madrid, Spain, before continuing to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, where they boarded the NOAA ship Pisces. Their participation is part of the 2026 Aerosols and Ocean Science Expeditions, known as AEROSE, a research campaign designed to study African air mass outflows and their impact on climate, weather and environmental health. According to an invitation letter from Arizona State University, Dr. Mensah and a VUU student team were invited to participate in the cruise, which begins its second leg in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, and is scheduled to end in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Aug. 14. During the cruise, Mensah will supervise Blackburn's research focused on Saharan mineral dust particles suspended in the atmosphere and in the upper layers of the ocean. The research will be conducted as the ship travels along the coastline of West Africa and across the tropical Atlantic Ocean. The VUU team is expected to conduct sun photometer measurements to characterize the optical properties of airborne particles throughout the cruise. The expedition will also collect measurements related to aerosol optical depth, surface ozone, carbon monoxide, methane, and dust samples from international scientific moorings serviced during the cruise. The opportunity marks a significant experiential learning moment for VUU students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Blackburn’s participation reflects the university’s continued commitment to expanding access to hands-on research, global scientific exploration and career-connected learning experiences for students in the sciences. For Virginia Union University, the expedition represents more than travel abroad. It is an opportunity for students and faculty to contribute to research with global implications while demonstrating the power of HBCU scholarship in scientific discovery, environmental research and experiential education. Follow our official social media platforms and VUEN as we share their journey abroad, offering the VUU community a closer look at the research experience as it unfolds.
