Best Buy Doubles Down on Investment in HBCU Talent and Black Consumers as Amazon Retreats

In an era when many of America's largest corporations are quietly walking back the diversity and recruitment commitments they made just a few years ago, one national retailer has done the opposite. Best Buy has doubled down - deepening its investment in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Black youth, and the Black consumer even as competitors like Amazon scale back. For the students, alumni, and employers who make up the HBCU Connect community, the contrast could not be sharper.

The retreat has been well documented. In a December 2024 internal memo, Amazon told employees it was "winding down outdated programs and materials" tied to representation and inclusion, aiming to complete the process by the end of that year. By February 2025, the company had scrubbed the phrase "inclusion and diversity" from its annual report entirely, joining Meta, Google, and others in a broad industry pullback. In practical terms for our world, that has meant cancelled recruitment partnerships and a shrinking presence on the very platforms - like HBCU Connect - built to connect Black talent with employers.

By the numbers - Best Buy's commitment:
  • $44 million five-year commitment to expand college prep and career opportunities, announced in its diversity and community plan.
  • A founding partner in the Congressional HBCU Partnership Challenge, a bipartisan effort to deepen ties between private companies and HBCUs.
  • A scholarship fund built with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) providing Black students up to $20,000 per year - plus internships and mentorship.
  • A national network of Best Buy Teen Tech Centers, with a goal of 100 centers serving 30,000 teens in historically disinvested communities.

Best Buy's approach is notable because it has stayed consistent through changing political winds.

The company's Teen Tech Centers - free, after-school spaces equipped with cutting-edge technology - feed directly into a year-long Career Pathways program in fields like cybersecurity, computer repair, and audio engineering, culminating in paid summer internships. As recently as October 2025, Best Buy was still publishing stories about Teen Tech Center participants turning those skills into full careers. HBCUs remain central to that pipeline: these institutions produce 27% of all African-American STEM graduates and 40% of all African-American engineers, a talent pool Best Buy has publicly said it wants more of on its team.

"What we're watching is a real-time test of who actually meant it," said William R. Moss III, CEO of HBCU Connect. "When the headlines changed, a lot of companies changed with them - they cancelled recruitment, deleted the language, and moved on. Best Buy didn't flinch. They kept funding scholarships, kept building Teen Tech Centers, and kept showing up for our students. That's the difference between a marketing campaign and a genuine commitment."

Moss added that the loyalty runs both ways. "The Black community spends billions of dollars every year, and our members notice who invests back in them and who disappears the moment it becomes inconvenient," he said. "Best Buy has earned goodwill with the HBCU community that money alone can't buy. Companies that abandon this space are going to find that trust is very hard to win back."

The takeaway for our community is straightforward. For students and alumni, Best Buy's scholarships, Teen Tech Centers, and Career Pathways remain live, active opportunities worth pursuing. For employers, the moment is a reminder that consistency builds brand equity that recruiting sprints never will. HBCU Connect will continue to spotlight the partners who stay invested in Black talent - in good times and hard ones alike.
