Christian Dating With Godly Intentions

Today's society, many Christians look at being single as a disease.

Being single has always been a challenge for some, and that seems to be the case more so for single soldiers in God's army.

In today's society, many Christians look at being single as a disease, and they are inching to break free of the dating epidemic.

Because dating can lead to a number of things that can be considered "worldly" or "ungodly" and set many Christians back a foot in their walk with God, single Christians want to know the proper way to date and still live according to God's word.

Many churches now have singles ministries designed to teach singles how to do just that and connect them in a Christian environment and keep them at a godly standpoint.

North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship Church in Richardson is one of those churches. They address why it is so hard to be single and date while following Christ.

Associate Pastor Rick Cooper addressed dating, courtship, love, sex and romance issues throughout March in his Song of Solomon series. Based on the biblical teachings in the book Song of Solomonm, he says the series "gives a fresh approach to dating, romance and sex while exhausting principles to have a godly type of relationship with the opposite sex while also following God's will."

Dating has taken a new turn in today's society with new perspectives and concerns. Many in society see dating and sex as the same thing, and a sexual relationship can just as easily be mistaken for dating with the intention of being married.

"People have so many different experiences when it comes to dating," Cooper said. "The most common definition that people will give you for dating is that dating is when you find someone you decide to go out with."

The number one concern many Christians have when it comes to dating is sex.

How far is too far? What defines sex? Can spending too much time alone on a date pressure you to the unthinkable?

James Minor, a volunteer for North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship, is a witness to how many question how to be in a relationship and still love God.

"We are suggested to date in a group setting with other singles and not develop an exclusive relationship," Minor said.

Some say that developing an exclusive relationship can lead to developing feelings too early on in a relationship, and what might have started out as two people having fun can be in one person's mind a relationship headed towards something bigger.

Many singles have experienced pain and hurt from past relationships that affect their opinions on dating. Cooper stresses how guarding your heart can help from investing too much into a dead relationship.

"It's good to have friends to go out with and do things with," Minor said. "When people get too involved in a relationship they tend to start doing things that married people do and they are not in marriage but a relationship and there is always that chance that the relationship will end."

Although there is a high number of singles in most churches, there are a greater percentage of married couples sitting in the pews.

"Most singles are people who eventually want to get married," Cooper said. "There is a certain amount of maturity that goes into being married, and if you haven't sacrificed for God, it will reflect in your marriage."
