Hampton 's Yvette Lewis named top female athlete

Posted By: Laila Thompson on July 13, 2006 Hampton , Va. � Hampton University Athlete of the Year Yvette Lewis has been named the Most Outstanding Female Collegiate Athlete in the state of Virginia by the Peninsula Sports Club. Lewis received the award at the Peninsula Sports Club's 57 th Annual Headliner's Night on Monday. Lewis' future teammate Francena McCorory was also honored, along with the Pirates' head football coach Joe Taylor and softball coach Tiny Laster. As if there was ever any doubt to her deserving the state award, Lewis solidified her place among the top professional and college athletes in the country when she finished third in the triple jump at last week's USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. That effort capped what can only be described as one of the best season's ever by any athlete, regardless of the sport. During the indoor season she led the Lady Pirates to their fourth consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship and was named the meet's Most Outstanding Performer for the second straight year after breaking her own conference record with 48 individual points. Lewis won the pentathlon, the 200-meter dash and the triple jump, while finishing second in the long jump, third in the high jump and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles. She then went on to the NCAA Indoor Championships where she competed in the 60-meter hurdles and won a national championship in the triple jump with a mark of 45 feet, 1 ½ inches. The outdoor season mirrored the indoor campaign for Lewis as she again dominated the conference, regional and national meets. At the MEAC Championship she set meet records in the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump, while also winning the 200-meter dash. In addition, Lewis placed second in the long jump and the 100-meter dash. In doing so she qualified for the NCAA East Regionals in an astonishing five individual events and two relays. She won the East Regional triple jump competition, breaking the meet record in the process and qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Sacramento where she fought off injury to finish fourth. Lewis has also been named a member of the USA 's Under 23 Team which will compete in Santo Domingo on July 7 through 10 at the North American, Central American, and Caribbean (NACAC) Under 23 Championships.
