A Deeper Dive Into Subaru’s 2026 Outback Wilderness SUV

Posted By: Randi Payton on September 08, 2026 My second drive of the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness this year let me take a closer look at this rebuilt model's capabilities and driving performance. My first encounter introduced me to Subaru’s dramatic redesign. This time, after a full week of driving across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia, I looked beyond the new styling and technology to focus on how well the Wilderness performs in the real world. What I discovered is that Subaru has struck an increasingly rare balance: an SUV rugged enough for serious off-road adventures yet comfortable and civilized enough for everyday commuting. The redesigned 2026 Outback marks a significant departure from the model’s station-wagon heritage. It looks taller, more upright, and muscular, giving the Wilderness in particular the presence of a genuine midsize adventure SUV. Power and Performance The Wilderness delivers turbo power when it counts. Under the hood is a 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER four-cylinder engine that produces 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission and Subaru’s standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Towing capacity is 3,500 pounds. On my second drive, I paid closer attention to how that power translates into everyday performance. Around Washington, the turbocharged engine delivered the low-end response needed to merge into traffic and navigate congested suburban roads. Step firmly on the accelerator, and the Wilderness launches with authority, feeling energetic without becoming overly aggressive. I appreciated its performance most on the Capital Beltway and the region’s interstate corridors, where the Wilderness had plenty of reserve power for passing and merging. Once at cruising speed, it settled into a comfortable highway rhythm. New electronically controlled dampers are a key upgrade. The suspension adapts to changing conditions, improving traction and ride comfort. Combined with Subaru’s AWD system, the Wilderness felt reassuringly planted on the DMV’s mix of smooth highways, patched pavement, uneven streets, and potholes. The combination demonstrated something important during my weeklong test: Subaru hasn't sacrificed everyday ride quality to make the Wilderness more capable. More Rugged Exterior The redesigned Wilderness also looks the part. Its more vertical front end, aggressive grille, substantial protective body cladding, and distinctive headlights give it a bolder appearance. Wilderness-specific Anodized Copper-finish accents further distinguish it from other Outbacks. But much of what sets the Wilderness apart is functional, not cosmetic. Ground clearance measures an impressive 9.5 inches, and redesigned bumpers improve approach and departure angles. Subaru equips the Wilderness with 17-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires, front underbody protection, and a full-size spare. Heavy-duty roof rails can support up to 800 pounds when the vehicle is parked, making rooftop tents and other outdoor gear a real possibility. Yet what stood out during my DMV driving was how little all that off-road hardware interfered with the Wilderness' ability to function as an everyday vehicle. A More Modern Interior The transformation continues inside, with a 12.1-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that give the cabin a more contemporary look. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make smartphone integration convenient, while durable StarTex upholstery, contrast stitching, all-weather floor mats, and available Nappa leather seating balance ruggedness with comfort. There's also plenty of usable passenger and cargo space. The Wilderness can handle family duty during the week and outdoor gear on the weekend. A power rear gate and 60/40 folding rear seats make it easy to accommodate larger cargo. Technology and Safety Subaru has also continued to make safety technology an important part of the Outback experience. The Wilderness includes upgraded EyeSight Driver Assist Technology with Automatic Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, and Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering. Blind-Spot Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Warning are standard, and Reverse Automatic Braking is standard for 2026. Automatic Emergency Steering can provide steering and braking assistance when the system determines a collision may be avoided. Subaru's DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation system can monitor for signs of driver distraction or drowsiness—technology that is especially meaningful in the DMV's seemingly endless stretches of stop-and-go traffic. Fuel Economy, Models and Pricing The Wilderness' added capability comes at a price at the gas pump. It is rated at 21 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and approximately 23 mpg combined, compared with 25/31 mpg for naturally aspirated Outback models. The 2026 Outback lineup includes six trims: Premium ($34,995), Limited ($41,715), Limited XT ($44,365), Wilderness ($44,995), Touring ($45,395), and Touring XT ($47,995). These estimated MSRPs don't include destination charges or options. The 2026 Outback Wilderness may look like it's built for spending every weekend climbing mountains and exploring trails. But after living with it for a week, I found that I don't have to live in the wilderness to appreciate what it can do.
