For more than 160 years, Virginia Union University has played an important role in preserving Richmond’s history—not simply by protecting historic places, but by giving them new purpose. From its beginnings at Lumpkin’s Jail, where a place of bondage was transformed into a place of education for formerly enslaved people, to the preservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings across its campus, VUU has demonstrated that preservation and progress can work together. That legacy continues with the former Richmond Community Hospital, a significant landmark in Richmond’s African American history. Virginia Union is committed to preserving the historic hospital building and incorporating it into the future development of the site through adaptive reuse. For VUU, historic stewardship is about more than buildings. It is about preserving the stories, achievements, and memories connected to them while ensuring these spaces continue to serve future generations. As Dr. Hakim J. Lucas writes, “Preservation and progress do not have to be opposing ideas.” For more than 160 years, Virginia Union has kept history alive by educating people within it—and remains committed to that responsibility for generations to come.
