FAMU Falls to No. 7 Miami in Record-Setting Loss at Hard Rock Stadium

FAMU Falls to No. 7 Miami in Record-Setting Loss at Hard Rock Stadium
Posted By: Roger Gates on September 11, 2026

The Florida A&M University Rattlers endured a difficult Thursday night in Miami Gardens, falling 77-7 to the seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes in a game that saw the home team set multiple offensive records at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a commanding start, scoring 21 points in the opening quarter and adding 28 more in the second to take a 49-0 lead into halftime. Miami continued its offensive onslaught in the third quarter, tacking on another 28 points and reaching 77-0 with 3:31 remaining in the period.

Why It Matters: FAMU faced significant challenges entering this matchup, playing on just four days’ rest after competing in the Orange Blossom Classic and missing starting quarterback Isaiah Knowles due to a season-ending injury.

FAMU avoided the shutout when its defense scored a touchdown following a Miami fumble. However, the 70-point margin represented the largest victory margin in the series history for the Hurricanes. The 77 points tied Miami’s program record, previously achieved against Savannah State in both 2013 and 2018.

Offensive Dominance on Display

Miami finished with 856 yards on 73 plays, averaging an astounding 11.7 yards per snap. The total ranked third in ACC history and established a new Miami single-game record. The Hurricanes’ 42 first downs also set a new ACC mark.

By the Numbers: Miami produced nearly identical totals through the air and on the ground, passing for 426 yards and rushing for 430.

FAMU managed just 107 yards of total offense.

Darian Mensah completed 14 of 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns to lead Miami’s aerial attack. Backup Luke Nickel was perfect, going 8-for-8 for 144 yards and three more scores. Running back Mark Fletcher Jr. needed only seven carries to rush for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hurricanes had piled up 603 yards and 63 points before the third quarter even reached its midpoint. The lopsided affair drew national attention, including a reaction from ESPN personality Pat McAfee on social media.

Rattlers Face Difficult Circumstances

The statistical disparity was stark. Miami held a 42-4 advantage in first downs and averaged 9.4 more yards per play. FAMU converted only one of 14 third-down attempts and managed just 37 rushing yards for the game.

Key Takeaway: The Rattlers faced Miami on a short turnaround after losing 31-13 to South Carolina State in the Orange Blossom Classic on Sunday, leaving only four days between games.

The loss dropped FAMU to 1-2 in Quinn Gray Sr.’s first season as head coach. The absence of starting quarterback Isaiah Knowles, who suffered a season-ending injury, compounded the challenges facing the Rattlers in this difficult road matchup. Miami improved to 2-0 while producing one of the most explosive offensive performances in ACC history.
