Five Must-Watch Matchups Highlight Week 2 of HBCU Football Season

Week two of the HBCU football season promises exciting action across all divisions, featuring the opening of conference play in both the CIAA and SIAC, a renewal of a storied rivalry between former MEAC foes, and a nationally televised showdown against a Power Four program.

As Division II conference play kicks into gear, several top contenders will face early tests that could shape their championship aspirations and postseason hopes. Here are the five must-watch games for the HBCU community this weekend.

Howard Takes on Reigning National Champion

The Howard Bison will have the spotlight on September 12 at noon when they travel to face Indiana on the Big Ten Network. This marks a historic opportunity as Howard becomes the second consecutive HBCU to face the reigning College Football Playoff National Champion, following Grambling State’s matchup against Ohio State last season.

The Bison showed resilience in their last outing against Richmond, nearly erasing a 20-0 halftime deficit by scoring a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to cut the lead to one possession.

SIAC Conference Play Begins

Kentucky State opens its quest for a SIAC championship when it faces Clark Atlanta on September 12 at 6:00 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The Thorobreds enter after suffering their first loss against Southern, while the Panthers are coming off their first win of the season against Morehouse.

This matchup marks the first time the game will be played in Atlanta since 2009.

Postseason Implications and Conference Championship Defense

Fayetteville State faces a critical test for its postseason aspirations when it meets Division II powerhouse Valdosta State on September 12 at 6:00 p.m. ET. Both teams enter with perfect 2-0 records, with the Broncos coming off a 10-7 victory over UNC Pembroke.

Last season, Fayetteville State fell short of an at-large bid into the Division II Playoffs, while Valdosta State made it in as Gulf South Conference champions after overcoming a 2-4 start. The Broncos will look to improve on their last performance against the Blazers, a 34-0 loss.

Meanwhile, Johnson C. Smith officially begins its CIAA championship defense against in-state rival Winston-Salem State on September 12 at 6:00 p.m. ET. The Golden Bulls are riding a three-game win streak over the Rams, including a 52-27 victory last season. Johnson C. Smith recorded its first win over Albany State in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic, while Winston-Salem State is still searching for its first win and first points of the year.

Aggie-Eagle Classic Renews Storied Rivalry

The Aggie-Eagle Classic returns to Durham, North Carolina, on September 12 at 6:00 p.m. ET on ESPN+ as North Carolina Central hosts North Carolina A&T. The Eagles have dominated this series recently, winning their last four matchups by convincing margins. Each victory has come by two possessions, including the last two contests which were 40-point wins for a combined 128 points. A win for North Carolina Central would tie for the longest streak they have accumulated in this rivalry since 1974.
