My Long Road with the Range Rover Sport: The Evolution of Land Rover’s Flagship SUV

My Long Road with the Range Rover Sport: The Evolution of Land Rover’s Flagship SUV
Posted By: Randi Payton on September 16, 2026

I have had a long relationship with the Range Rover Sport, which Land Rover introduced in the 2005 model year as a sportier, more road-focused companion to the standard Range Rover, drawing styling cues from the Range Stormer concept shown a year earlier. From the first drive, it was clear the Sport needed tighter on-road handling and a more athletic character.

Then, in 2014, the second-generation Sport addressed that need with a lighter, aluminum-intensive architecture shared with the standard Range Rover. It sharpened that mission considerably. Every time I tested it, the improvements in steering feel, body control, and outright pace were obvious compared with its predecessor. By the time the third generation launched in 2023, the Sport had become Land Rover's dynamic flagship: an SUV built to go toe-to-toe with performance-oriented rivals from Mercedes, Porsche, and BMW without sacrificing genuine off-road ability.

This brings me to this year's test drive. The 2026 Range Rover Sport was already a refined SUV, balancing legendary off-road capability with luxurious on-road manners. After spending time behind the wheel of this year's model, it's clear Land Rover has sharpened its competitive edge even further, doubling down on dynamic performance and luxury.

What's New for 2026
The real news is the expanded high-performance lineup, featuring three new range-topping SV variants. These models push the boundaries of what a luxury SUV can achieve, in both outright power and handling precision. Beyond the performance tiers, the rest of the range receives incremental refinements to powertrain efficiency and cabin technology, keeping it highly competitive against rivals such as the Mercedes GLE, Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne, and the BMW X5.

Engine, Power, and Performance
A versatile range of powertrains defines the driving experience. The core lineup carries over familiar engines, each fine-tuned for sharper response and improved efficiency. The centerpiece for enthusiasts is the potent eight-cylinder, producing 523 horsepower and delivering effortless acceleration with a refined, muscular soundtrack. For buyers prioritizing city driving and sustainability, the plug-in hybrid variants continue to offer an impressive blend of electric-only range and combustion-engine backup.

On paved roads, the Range Rover Sport feels remarkably agile for its size. Credit the advanced suspension system, which now includes predictive technology that scans the road ahead and adjusts damping in real time. The result is a ride that stays smooth over broken pavement yet remains composed and flat through corners. Steering is direct and well-weighted, instilling confidence whether threading through city traffic or cruising the highway.

The Sport masterfully disguises its substantial curb weight, offering a genuinely dynamic character that rewards spirited driving.

Interior, Design, and Technology
The design remains distinctly Range Rover, with clean, minimalist exterior lines that emphasize the SUV's athletic stance. Inside, the cabin feels even more elevated than before, with higher-quality materials, improved sound insulation, and a noticeably quieter cabin, even at higher speeds.

Technology upgrades are immediately noticeable. The dashboard's centerpiece is a sleek, 13.1-inch curved touchscreen running the latest Pivi Pro interface. It's responsive and intuitive, and it seamlessly supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 3D Surround Camera system, paired with ClearSight Ground View, provides a “see-through” perspective that makes parking and tight maneuvers far easier, adding real utility to the luxury.

The 2026 Range Rover Sport is available in several trim levels to suit different preferences for performance and luxury: SE ($77,100), Dynamic SE ($90,800), Autobiography ($120,000), and SV Variants ($120,000) MSRP. The starting MSRP varies by engine size and options. The high-performance Autobiography and the new SV variants offer more luxury features, advanced suspension, and more powerful engines, all at a higher price point.

From Trail-Ready to Track-Capable
Reflecting on decades of test drives, what strikes me most is how the suspension and chassis technology tracks almost perfectly with the shift in buyer priorities. Early Range Rovers featured suspension tuned primarily for articulation and durability over rough terrain, with on-road composure as a secondary benefit. Each successive generation added more sophisticated electronically controlled air suspension and active roll control. This year's Range Rover Sport features predictive systems that scan the road ahead and adjust damping in real time. The result today is a vehicle that corners flat and confidently on a mountain road, something the original Classic could never have managed, while still retaining genuine capability off the pavement.

The Culmination
Testing the 2026 Range Rover Sport, including its new range-topping SV performance variants, feels like the natural culmination of everything I've watched this nameplate become since 1987. The brute-force character of the early Classics has given way to genuine dynamic precision; the workmanlike cabins have been replaced by some of the industry's most refined interiors; and the suspension technology has evolved from simple air springs to predictive, road-scanning systems. Yet remarkably, Land Rover has never fully abandoned the off-road DNA that started this whole story nearly six decades ago.
