Posted By: Roger Gates on September 18, 2026 Bethune-Cookman University's tennis team is set to kick off its fall season at the HBCU National Championships, marking the beginning of competition for the Wildcats as they take the court against fellow historically Black colleges and universities. The tournament represents a significant opportunity for Bethune-Cookman to showcase its tennis program on a national stage while competing against other HBCU institutions. The fall slate provides crucial preparation and competitive experience for the team ahead of the spring championship season. Key Takeaway: The HBCU National Championships serve as the opening event for Bethune-Cookman's fall tennis schedule, bringing together tennis programs from historically Black colleges and universities across the nation. The championships offer student-athletes from HBCUs a dedicated platform to compete at the highest level while representing their institutions. For Bethune-Cookman, based in Daytona Beach, Florida, the tournament provides an early-season measuring stick as the Wildcats assess their progress and build momentum for future competition. About Bethune-Cookman UniversityBethune-Cookman University is a private historically Black university founded in 1904 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. The institution has a rich athletic tradition and competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), one of the premier athletic conferences among HBCUs. The university's athletic programs have long been a source of pride for the campus community and alumni. What to Watch: The fall season serves as a critical development period for collegiate tennis programs, allowing coaches to evaluate talent, build team chemistry, and prepare players for the rigors of spring conference competition. The tennis program at Bethune-Cookman continues to develop student-athletes both on and off the court, emphasizing academic achievement alongside athletic excellence. The HBCU National Championships provide these student-athletes with valuable match experience in a competitive environment designed specifically for historically Black college and university programs. Why It Matters: Championships dedicated to HBCU tennis programs create opportunities for visibility, competition, and celebration of athletic excellence within the Black college community while fostering connections among institutions with shared missions and values. As the fall season progresses, the Wildcats will look to build on their performance at the championships and continue their development throughout the autumn months. The experience gained at this tournament will prove invaluable as the team prepares for conference play and pursues its competitive goals for the academic year.
