A Labor Market Moving Backward for Black WorkersThe September 2026 jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed the Black unemployment rate rising from 6.0 percent to 7.0 percent in a single month the fastest one-month increase since March and April of 2020. Unemployment fell for every other major racial group in the same report.
Unemployment rates, September 2026. U.S. national rate: 4.2 percent. Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The picture is sharper still for the youngest workers entering the market. Unemployment among young Black workers jumped from 11.5 percent to 14.4 percent between August and September 2026 a population that includes this spring's HBCU graduating classes. Professional Black Women Are Absorbing the ShockWithin those numbers, one group has been hit hardest and earliest. The unemployment rate for Black women rose from 5.9 percent to 7.3 percent in September 2026, its highest level since February. That is not a one-month anomaly it is the continuation of a two-year contraction concentrated almost entirely on Black women in professional and public-sector roles. The DOGE and DEI Rollback, By the Numbers
The federal government has historically been a primary engine of Black professional advancement, largely because it adopted anti-discrimination hiring standards decades ahead of the private sector. The MIT working paper documents the scale of that reliance: 4.1 percent of Black women ages 25 to 54 worked for the federal government in 2023 and 2024, compared with 3.2 percent of Black men, 2.1 percent of white workers and 1.3 percent of Hispanic workers. Those federal reductions have landed alongside a broad corporate retreat from diversity, equity and inclusion programs, including the elimination of DEI offices, recruiting pipelines and HBCU partnership budgets. For experienced Black women professionals, the two shocks have arrived together: the public-sector career ladder narrowed at the same moment the private-sector on-ramps built to replace it were being dismantled. Why HBCU CONNECT Is Running This Event Now"The data tells us exactly who is being pushed out of the workforce right now, and it is the same community we have served since 1999. When institutional pipelines close, direct access matters more, not less. On October 21st we are putting over 40 employers who are actively hiring in the same virtual room as our members no gatekeepers, no travel cost, no application black hole."
Will Moss, Founder and CEO, HBCUConnect.com

Data sources. Unemployment figures for September 2026 are from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics monthly employment situation report, as analyzed by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Findings on the employment effects of the Department of Government Efficiency are from "When (Government) Work Disappears: Disparate Employment Effects of DOGE in the Short-Run," a May 2025 working paper by Brandon Enriquez, National Bureau of Economic Research, circulated by the MIT Shaping the Future of Work Initiative; the paper is a working draft and has not been peer reviewed. Figures on Black women's share of the federal workforce and of federal job cuts, and on job losses between February and July 2025, reflect analysis of federal employment and BLS data reported by Ms. Magazine, citing gender economist Katica Roy and the National Women's Law Center.
