Understanding the Apartheid System Affecting Palestinians

Understanding the Apartheid System Affecting Palestinians
Posted By: Joel Savage on October 05, 2026

An illustration of a Palestinian family walking through a fenced checkpoint, with Israeli watchtowers in the background, emphasizing the contrast between restriction and resilience.

Apartheid is one of the most brutal systems ever engineered by human beings, a deliberate structure of domination, separation, and control. In South Africa, apartheid was not simply a political policy; it was a complete architecture of oppression designed to ensure that one racial group lived freely while another lived under constant restriction.

Black South Africans were denied movement, land, dignity, and basic human rights. Their lives were controlled through pass laws, segregated spaces, forced removals, and violent enforcement. The world eventually recognized apartheid as a crime against humanity.

When we speak of apartheid today, many immediately think of South Africa. But apartheid is not confined to one country or one era. It is a system, and systems can be replicated. The tragedy is that the same patterns of domination and segregation that once shocked the world in South Africa are visible in the daily lives of Palestinians.

The Palestinian experience did not begin with checkpoints or walls. It began in 1948, during the Nakba, the mass displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinians from their homes. Entire villages were emptied, families scattered, and a people who had lived on their land for centuries suddenly became refugees overnight. This foundational trauma created the conditions for a long-term system of control that continues today.

The South African Parallel: Why the Comparison Exists

South Africans who lived under apartheid have repeatedly said that what Palestinians endure is familiar. Former South African officials, activists, and clergy have visited the West Bank and Gaza and described the situation as “worse than apartheid.” Their words carry weight because they recognize the architecture of oppression.

The similarities are undeniable. In South Africa, Black citizens were forced to carry passbooks; in Palestine, permits and checkpoints control movement. South Africa had whites-only roads; Palestine has Israeli-only roads.

Black communities were forcibly relocated; Palestinian homes are demolished or seized. South Africa enforced dual legal systems; Palestine lives under separate laws for Israelis and Palestinians. And in both cases, military or police forces ensured compliance through intimidation and violence.

Apartheid is not only about race. It is about domination. It is about ensuring one group’s freedom at the expense of another’s humanity. The comparison exists because the structural logic is the same.

Daily Life Under a Modern Apartheid Structure

For Palestinians, apartheid is not a historical memory — it is a daily reality: A Palestinian farmer cannot reach his land without passing through a military gate.

A student cannot attend university without crossing checkpoints.

A mother cannot take her sick child to a hospital without a permit.

A family in Gaza cannot leave the strip due to a blockade that has lasted more than a decade.

Freedom becomes a privilege, not a right.

The system is designed to fragment Palestinian life, geographically, socially, and psychologically. It creates dependency, limits opportunity, and enforces vulnerability. Every aspect of life, education, healthcare, employment, travel, family reunification - is filtered through a structure of control. This is not accidental. It is systematic.

International Recognition: A Crime Against Humanity

Major human rights organizations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem, and UN experts have all described the situation as apartheid. Their reports are detailed, evidence-based, and consistent. They highlight patterns of segregation, domination, and systematic discrimination.

This global recognition matters because apartheid is not just a political term. It is a legal definition under international law. When a system meets the criteria, the world has a responsibility to acknowledge it.

The international community condemned apartheid in South Africa. Today, it faces a moral test: whether it will condemn apartheid when it appears in another form, in another land, affecting another people.

Why the World Must Pay Attention

Apartheid in South Africa ended because the world refused to look away. People spoke out, protested, wrote, and demanded justice. The same moral courage is needed today.

Ignoring Palestinian suffering does not make it disappear. Silence allows systems of oppression to deepen. The world must confront uncomfortable truths, not because Palestinians are perfect or politics are simple, but because human dignity is universal.

The Palestinian struggle is not a distant conflict; it is a human story of displacement, resilience, and the fight for dignity. Their suffering is not a political debate; it is a humanitarian crisis.

Conclusion: A Call for Humanity and Justice

Understanding apartheid is not about comparing pain. It is about recognizing patterns of injustice wherever they appear. The Palestinian struggle reflects a system of segregation and domination that the world has seen before, and vowed never to allow again.

Just as South Africans overcame apartheid through courage, solidarity, and global pressure, Palestinians deserve the same recognition and support. Their freedom is not a political aspiration; it is a human necessity.

History has shown that oppressive systems eventually fall. What remains is the moral question: Did we speak when it mattered?
