Virginia State University Breaks All-Time Enrollment Record With Largest Class in Its History

Virginia State University Breaks All-Time Enrollment Record With Largest Class in Its History
Posted By: Roger Gates on October 21, 2026

PETERSBURG, Va. — Virginia State University is making history. For the 2026-27 academic year, the storied HBCU has enrolled more than 6,350 students — the largest enrollment in the University's documented history, surpassing the previous high of more than 6,200 students set back in 2012. At the same time, VSU welcomed 1,725 first-time freshmen, the largest entering freshman class ever recorded at the institution, capping an unprecedented enrollment year for the "Trojan Family."

The milestone marks a defining moment for a university that opened its very first academic year in 1883-84 with just 126 students. It also caps a remarkable run of growth: VSU's enrollment has climbed from 4,020 students in fall 2020 to 5,754 in fall 2025, and now past 6,350 for 2026-27 — an expansion that bucks the national trend of declining college-age populations and shrinking enrollment at many institutions.

By the numbers:
  • 6,350+ total students — an all-time record
  • 1,725 first-time freshmen — the largest entering class in VSU history
  • Up from 4,020 students in fall 2020 and 5,754 in fall 2025
  • Previous record: 6,200+ set in 2012

"Virginia State University has never served more students or welcomed a larger entering freshman class than we have this year. That is a powerful statement about the confidence students and families are placing in this institution," said Dr. Alexis Brooks-Walter, Vice President for Student Success and Administration.

"Every one of these students arrived with a goal and entrusted VSU with helping them achieve it. Our responsibility is to match this historic enrollment with an equally strong commitment to their success, from the moment they arrive through the day they earn their degrees."

For the 1,725 new freshmen, VSU is the starting point for a college education and the doors it can open for their families and communities — a continuation of the University's enduring mission of access, opportunity and achievement. The record comes on the heels of another banner year for VSU, which recently posted the nation's largest climb in U.S. News & World Report's 2026 HBCU rankings, leaping 12 spots to #11 among the country's top Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

"This historic milestone reflects the extraordinary momentum of Virginia State University," said President Makola M. Abdullah. "Students are choosing VSU in record numbers, and that choice matters. It affirms the value of what we are building here and challenges us to continue raising the bar. We are growing, we are advancing, and we are demonstrating every day that Greater Happens Here."

The record-breaking enrollment represents more than a new high-water mark. It signals a new chapter for VSU — one defined by growth, opportunity and an unwavering commitment to student success.
