Posted By: HBCU CONNECT on October 24, 2026 Check out this video from Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina! Voorhees University welcomed Congressman James E. Clyburn to campus for the Mayor’s Symposium, bringing together students, faculty, staff, community leaders, mayors from surrounding communities, and Denmark Technical College President and CEO Dr. Eric Brown for a powerful morning centered on leadership, civic engagement, history, perseverance, and community impact. In a wide-ranging address, Congressman Clyburn spoke directly to the young people in attendance about the power of their voice and the importance of understanding the value of one vote. He challenged students to remain engaged, think critically about how they use social media, reconcile differences, and focus on making meaningful progress in their communities. One of the defining messages of the day was a simple but powerful question: Are you trying to make headlines, or are you trying to make headway? Congressman Clyburn also reflected on his longstanding relationship with Voorhees University, Denmark, and Bamberg County, sharing personal stories about the role the community has played throughout his career and his continued commitment to historically Black colleges and universities and rural communities. Beyond the podium, Congressman Clyburn took time to connect directly with Voorhees students, including sitting down for an interview with a VU Mass Communication student and spending time taking photos and engaging with students following the symposium. A special thank you to Dr. Thelma Sojourner for her community leadership and for helping bring this meaningful event together. This full address captures a moment of history, wisdom, access, and lived experience being poured directly into the next generation. Featured Speaker: Congressman James E.
