Posted By: Brian Smith on October 27, 2026 EXPERIENCE REIMAGINED Reflecting on the Experience. Leading What’s Next. By Brian Smith | Enterprise Infrastructure & Technology Project Management Leader Over the course of more than 20 years in project management, I’ve learned that successful transformation isn’t simply about implementing new technologies. It’s about bringing people, processes, and strategic objectives together to deliver meaningful, measurable outcomes. My professional journey has taken me through Fortune 100 organizations, federal technology environments, enterprise infrastructure modernization programs, and complex operational transformations. Each experience has reinforced an important principle: Technology creates opportunity, but leadership turns that opportunity into results. As I reflect on the projects I’ve led, the teams I’ve supported, and the challenges we’ve overcome, I recognize that my career has been defined not only by the complexity of the initiatives I’ve managed but also by the relationships, collaboration, and accountability required to deliver them. Two Decades of Experience. One Commitment to Delivery. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to support more than 100 enterprise projects, working across infrastructure modernization, technical program management, enterprise deployments, and operational transformation. My experience spans several critical disciplines: * Enterprise Infrastructure Modernization * Technical Program and Project Management * Project Management Office (PMO) Governance * Network Infrastructure Refresh and Deployment * Data Center Modernization * Windows Server Migration and Decommissioning * Monitoring and Observability Transformation * IT Service Management and Operational Readiness * Risk, Dependency, and Issue Management * Cross-Functional Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement While each discipline requires specialized knowledge, they share a common foundation: structured execution, transparent communication, and the ability to coordinate diverse teams toward a shared objective. I’ve learned that effective project leadership requires understanding not only what needs to be accomplished but also how decisions, dependencies, resources, and risks influence the broader enterprise. Leading Enterprise Infrastructure Modernization One of the most significant chapters of my career involved supporting nationwide infrastructure modernization initiatives within the federal sector. These programs required coordinating technical teams, stakeholders, vendors, and operational resources across geographically distributed environments. Nationwide Field Office Infrastructure Refresh I helped lead infrastructure modernization efforts supporting more than 70 field offices across multiple regions. The initiative involved coordinating the replacement and deployment of critical network infrastructure, including routers, switches, wireless access points, power management systems, and supporting connectivity components. Beyond the technical implementation, the program required disciplined scheduling, deployment readiness assessments, vendor coordination, change management, and executive-level reporting. Successfully coordinating initiatives of this scale reinforced the importance of maintaining visibility across every stage of delivery, from planning and procurement through installation, validation, and operational transition. Windows Server Modernization Another major initiative involved the retirement and migration of more than 900 Windows Server 2016 systems. The program required coordinating application owners, infrastructure teams, technical stakeholders, and operational leadership to address migration requirements, system dependencies, decommissioning activities, and compliance considerations. Managing a transformation of this magnitude demanded a balance between technical understanding and project governance. It also demonstrated how disciplined tracking, stakeholder accountability, and proactive risk management can help organizations navigate large-scale technology transitions. Data Center and Network Infrastructure Modernization My infrastructure portfolio also included initiatives involving data center connectivity, core network upgrades, server modernization, and enterprise bandwidth improvements. These efforts supported the modernization of critical technology environments while strengthening infrastructure reliability and operational readiness. Coordinating these programs required collaboration across network engineering, data center operations, server infrastructure, cybersecurity, and enterprise change management teams. The experience reinforced an important lesson: The success of infrastructure modernization depends as much on coordination and execution as it does on technology. Modernizing Monitoring and Enterprise Operations Enterprise transformation extends beyond replacing aging infrastructure. Organizations must also modernize how they monitor, manage, and support increasingly complex technology environments. My experience includes supporting SolarWinds modernization initiatives involving cloud migration and authorization readiness. These efforts required coordination across infrastructure teams, security stakeholders, technical leadership, and operational support organizations. I have also worked with enterprise service management platforms, including ServiceNow, to support project governance, workflow visibility, reporting, and operational coordination. Together, these experiences strengthened my understanding of how infrastructure modernization, monitoring capabilities, and IT service management contribute to enterprise resilience. Leadership Beyond the Project Schedule One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that project management is not simply about maintaining schedules, tracking milestones, or producing status reports. It’s about creating the conditions that allow teams to succeed. Effective project leadership requires the ability to anticipate challenges, communicate expectations, resolve competing priorities, and maintain alignment between technical execution and organizational objectives. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on several leadership principles. Clarity creates accountability. When stakeholders understand their responsibilities, dependencies, and expected outcomes, teams are better positioned to execute successfully. Communication builds confidence. Consistent, transparent reporting enables leadership to make informed decisions while helping delivery teams remain aligned. Governance should enable delivery. Processes, controls, and reporting structures should strengthen execution rather than create unnecessary administrative complexity. Relationships drive results. Successful enterprise initiatives depend on trust, collaboration, and the willingness of individuals across different disciplines to work toward shared objectives. These principles have shaped my approach to managing complex programs and supporting high-performing teams. The Technology Behind the Transformation Throughout my career, I’ve worked within enterprise environments leveraging technologies and platforms such as: ServiceNow, Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Project, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Power BI, Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, Cisco networking technologies, SolarWinds, and Microsoft Excel. These platforms support essential aspects of project execution, including collaboration, infrastructure management, governance, reporting, and operational visibility. However, I’ve always believed that tools are only as effective as the leadership and processes supporting their use. The objective is not simply to implement technology but to ensure that technology contributes to measurable business and operational value. Experience Reimagined: The Next Chapter As I move into the next chapter of my professional journey, I bring forward more than two decades of experience navigating complex projects, leading modernization initiatives, and supporting enterprise transformation. I’m proud of the accomplishments behind me, but I’m equally motivated by the opportunities ahead. My recent acceptance of a Project Manager position with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) represents an exciting opportunity to apply my experience in an organization with a meaningful mission. After years of supporting technology transformation across federal and Fortune 100 environments, I’m looking forward to contributing my project leadership experience to an organization whose work has a direct impact on people’s lives. For me, this next chapter is about continuing to grow, contributing to something meaningful, and applying the lessons learned throughout my career to new challenges. Looking Ahead Experience provides perspective. Leadership provides direction. Execution delivers results. As technology continues to evolve, organizations will increasingly depend on professionals who can bridge technical complexity, operational priorities, and strategic business objectives. I look forward to continuing that work—building relationships, supporting teams, strengthening delivery practices, and helping organizations navigate transformation with confidence. Because the next chapter isn’t about starting over. It’s about building on everything the journey has taught me. ⸻ Brian Smith Enterprise Infrastructure | Technical Project Management | PMO Governance | Technology Transformation 20+ Years of Project Management Experience 100+ Enterprise Projects Supported 70+ Field Offices Modernized Reflecting on the Experience.
