National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair

Mitchell on August 02, 2006 DALLAS, TEXAS – After the success of last year’s event in Houston, the only national pre-law conference created especially for aspiring Black lawyers is returning this fall! The National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law Fair 2006 will be held from Friday, September 8, 2006 until Sunday, September 10, 2006 at the beautiful Magnolia Hotel located in the heart of downtown Dallas, Texas. The conference theme is "Encouraging Excellence, Strategic Thinking, and a Competitive Mindset Among African American Pre-Law Aspirants." Organizers are partnering with the American Bar Association’s Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO), the National Association of Future Black Law Students (NAFBLS), Recruit for Law School, Inc. and Black Esquire to bring another powerful, inspiring and information-packed event. This conference began last year as a positive and proactive response to the well-publicized criticism of affirmative action and negative statistics regarding the performance of African Americans in law school and in passing the bar exam. Since then, unfortunately news has not gotten better. It was recently revealed that the number of African Americans actually gaining admission into law school is currently at a low not seen in well over a decade. This greatly-needed conference was designed specifically for Black pre-law school students to tackle these issues head on by providing them with the quality “insider” information and golden networking opportunities critical to being successful in the pursuit of a professional legal career – which many view as largely inaccessible for African Americans where Blacks make up less than 7% of law students and less than 4% of lawyers. In an affirming and encouraging environment, pre-law aspirants will be given “tough love” and told the truth about the realities of what it really takes to make it in the highly competitive world of law school admissions, the difficulties of and lessons to be taken from the all-consuming law school experience, and the challenges and rewards of carving a career inside and outside of the legal profession with a hard-earned law degree in hand. Through this conference, future Black lawyers will benefit tremendously from being able to choose from a comprehensive menu of nearly 40 workshop session and panel discussion options covering everything from how admissions committees evaluate applicants, how to prepare for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), the importance of financial planning, the differences between a college and a legal education, how to deal with the rigors of law school, strategies for conquering the dynamics of the law school classroom, what life is like as a lawyer, the discipline needed to pass the notoriously tough bar exam, and even what path Black lawyers have taken in order to become judges. Moreover, there will be a Law School Recruitment Fair with over 100 law schools from across the country expected to attend specifically to recruit and meet prospective Black law students face to face. Not only that, conference attendees may take advantage of an intensive African American Leadership Training Institute, an Image Enhancement and Self-Marketing Institute, and a National Association of Future Black Law Students (NAFBLS) membership drive followed by a New Members’ Orientation/Q&A, and Chapter Development and Chapter Continuance sessions. Additionally, an intensive Pre-Law Admissions Advisement Institute and a Law School Preparation Advisement Institute will be conducted directed towards pre-law advisors, attorneys and law students who want to provide accurate and competent information to pre-law aspirants about getting into and succeeding in law school with special attention given to concerns facing the Black law school applicant. Moreover, the conference will hold its signature interactive event - the Law School Admissions & Preparation Help Advice Clinic. At the clinic, participants will have the unique opportunity to sit down and talk one-on-one with knowledgeable pre-law advisors, law students, law graduates or attorneys about their personal admissions credentials and get answers to any individual questions they might have regarding getting into law school and preparing for the law school experience. An intensive LSAT preparation course will also be conducted concurrently on Saturday and Sunday that participants can register for separately which will provide over 12 hours of strategic and practical training for those who are preparing to take the upcoming administrations of the all-important Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). In addition to all of the invaluable information that will be provided for two full days, critical networking activities are also planned to encourage social interaction between attendees and opportunities to create relationships with potential mentors. These events include a Friday evening Social Networking Reception/Mentorship Mixer and the Saturday night Legacy Builders Award Reception themed "Building Dreams, Establishing Legacies: Honoring Lawyers & Entrepreneurs Devoted to Reaching Back to Pull Up the Next Generation of Black Lawyers." On the last day of the conference, after two days filled with gaining information and opportunities to network, attendees can relax, have fun and get to know each other in a more informal setting by participating in a scheduled group trip to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. There will be over 90 (ninety) accomplished and community-minded speakers, presenters and panelists including law school administrators, law students, student leaders, law professors, attorneys and judges converging in Dallas from all over the United States to take part in this groundbreaking event. Among the long list of distinguished speakers are Dennis J. Shields, Esq., Dean of Phoenix School of Law and named defendant in the landmark Grutter v. Bollinger affirmation action law school admissions case, Michael Sterling, National Chairperson of the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA), Andrew L. West, Chairperson of the National Association of Future Black Law Students (NAFBLS), Latosha Lewis, Esq., President of the Houston Lawyers Association, Frederick Barrow, Esq., President of the J.L. Turner Legal Association: The African-American Bar Association of Dallas, Everett Bellamy, Esq., Assistant Dean and Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center, and Dr. John H. Jackson, Esq., Chief Policy Officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as well as a host of numerous others. This conference is truly a "can't miss" event that aspiring Black lawyers can take advantage of only once a year organized by people who genuinely and passionately care about their future success and want to help them defy the negative statistics and stereotypes.
