Summer Internship

Summer Internship
Posted By: James Bland on August 16, 2006

Today is going to be another long day. I am sitting at my desk, bored as usual. I'm in Wisconsin on an internship with UPS, in the business development office. I have no projects to work on. Most of the projects they give me take no time to complete. I spit them out as soon as they assign them to me. Facebook, Myspace, Hi5... they are all blocked from my computer. When I first discovered this I thought: how can I work under these conditions? Anyone who has interned in corporate America knows the importance of facebook at work. It's your lively hood. You check it every 5 minutes to see if you have a new message. You spend countless hours looking at pictures of your friends and browsing through people's pages. You leave novels on your friend’s wall. It keeps you sane during a work day that can drag on if you have nothing to do. But, I was not fortunate enough to be graced with the presence of facebook, so I've had to find other means to keep myself entertained and stay productive.

I started writing one day and before I knew it I had wrote a 15 page play. I sent it to my friend and she said it’s going to be a movie one day. I laughed. My friend thinks all of my work is a master piece. Every song I write she swears it's going to be a hit. She keeps me encouraged. It’s good to surround yourself with positive people; people who can understand your hustle and won't kill your dreams. Being on this internship has really given me some time to think about my future career. I have to do something I love. I can't waste my life in a job that I dislike. Life is too short. We only go around once, so I've decided to chase happiness and not money. People always say if you do what you love, you will find somebody to pay you for it. I believe that. Although this internship wasn’t exciting, it was definitely valuable. It's given me experience in business development, but most importantly it's shown me what I don't want to do with my life. So, at least now I can focus on what I do want to do.
