Out of Control: Aids in Black America

Out of Control: Aids in Black America
Posted By: Chenique L. Jeffress on August 25, 2006

Did anyone see the Primetime special on ABC about Aids in Black America? Aids is highest and the leading cause of death in African American women. The show listed five basic reasons why this is an epidemic. The number one reason was ignorance. We figure if we do not talk, get tested, get treatment that it will go away. The second reason was government failure. The government will not allow condoms in prison where 40% of the men are having sex with another man, and that is where most of the men are getting the disease. The third reason was Sex, the sexual patterns. The multiple partners and because of crime and the high prison rate there is 85 Black men to every 100 women, so men have less incentive to stay or want to be in committed relationship.

The fourth reason was What it means to be gay and black in america. With so many men being on the down low and living double lives Aids is spreading rapidly in our women. The last reason was failure to lead. It was stated that 80% of African American said religious faith was important, but the church does not address this issue. Most of all the white leaders they talked to didn't know about the epidemic and didn't care. The black leaders knew about it but were more involved with what was going in Africa. The leaders just placed the blame on someone else. Most of us know or knew someone that is living with Aids or has died from it. If you don't know someone the way things are going it will be impossible not to affect your life in one way or another.
