Can't we all just get along?

Can
Posted By: Nashay Batie on September 13, 2006

My stress level is so high. It's not due to my own situations but those among me. My friends and acquaintances come to me with their problems and so much drama is occurring. I just don't understand it. I HATE drama so I'm usually not a part of it but lately it seems as if everyone and their mothers want to tell me what's going on in their lives. I don't mind listening but when someone starts calling my name out or putting me in the middle of the drama, that's when there's gonna be a problem. The sad thing is, the drama that's going on is between two people I'm friends with and it's over something so trivial... yet these "adults" have taken something so small and made a big deal out of it.They've separated friendship over stupidity.

Where the real people at?

In all honesty, I really could care less who likes who, who's talking to who, or who said what to whomever.. I want to be a surgeon. My main goal is to be the best surgeon I can. I don't have time to be caught up in the he-said, she-saids. I thought by coming to Southern I'd meet some real people--ones who know what they want and are working hard to get to that point but, I have yet to meet 5 people like that.

Everyone is either into dating, gossiping, partying, or whatever.. It would be nice if I could meet some real people because I'm a bit through with all the superficiality.

Giving us a bad name

The black people on this campus irritate me. Most seem to not have any appreciation for education. I see a lot coming to class late, sitting in the back of the class sleeping, partying... then ask them why they aren't doing well in their classes: " Oh that teacher is too hard!" "Does he/she expect us to do that much work?" "That teacher don't know how to teach." It's one excuse after another and the blame never points to them...it's always an outside source. Coming to college is a privilege that many of our ancestors fought hard for. A degree isn't just going to be handed to anyone... so why do the black people look for handouts as if they aren't capable of putting forth effort? Should we not be looking for ways to prove out intellectual capabilities and taking full advantage of the resources available to us? I think it's ignorant to come to college expecting an easy ride all the way through. It's even more ignorant to get to this point and blow it due to lack of self-control and determination. Maybe I'm just ranting but seeing the black people here not living up to their full potential really bothers me.

Don't feel discouraged by what you see because any college campus you go to you will find a select group of black people who make our generation look useless. Your best bet is to keep your head high and try and educate those who don't really understand the importance of college.
