Jackson State Tigers are "Makin' It Happen"

Jackson State Tigers are "Makin
Posted By: C. Jerome Brown on October 18, 2006

When the JSU football team adopted the slogan “Makin’ It Happen: Right Here, Right Now” for the 2006 season, it was almost as if it was making a prediction of things to come.

The Tigers have opened the season with a 4-0 SWAC record, 5-1 overall and a No. 4 national ranking among black colleges.

“I feel good,” said junior Linebacker Daniel Brooks. “I also feel like we have a lot more to prove.”

The Tigers have already more than doubled their win total from last season(2) and appear poised to add more. They are in the midst of an impressive four-game winning streak in which they have outscored their opponents 108-70.

The Tigers are still smiling after a thrilling double overtime victory over Southern in a packed Veterans’ Memorial Stadium Saturday. They were down by as many as 14 points at one point in the game and came back to win by a field goal.

“I was a little afraid, but I have great confidence in our team,” said head coach Rick Comegy.

Freshman kicker Eric Perri came into the game at the end of the second overtime and easily booted a 22 yard field goal.

“I wasn’t nervous,” said Perri. “I do it all the time in practice.”

After the kick, Perri was given a boxing title belt and fellow teammates hoisted him onto their shoulders.

“I was happy. I was just glad we won the game.”

The Tigers showed great resiliency and determination as they were able to overcome several mistakes and big plays from Southern.

“We have a lot of talent and our guys showed some of the thing they can do,” said Comegy.

The Tigers currently sit atop the SWAC Eastern Division and have a legitimate chance to play for the SWAC Championship on Dec. 16 in Birmingham.

“I believe it’s a strong possibility,” said Brooks. “We just have to continue to come to practice and work. We’re still underdogs.”

The Tiger’s slogan has been meaningful so far because they are definitely “Makin’ It Happen.”
