Bowie State University Announces New Vice President for Information Technology

Bowie, Maryland (www.bowiestate.edu) – Bowie State University has named Dr. Al Valbuena as vice president for the Office of Information Technology. Dr. Valbuena’s professional experience spans over 30 years and includes distance education technologies and developing information systems that integrate academic applications to administrative systems. He brings to the University extensive knowledge in technology management and strategic planning, technology innovations and research, and technology funding.

Since 2003, Dr. Valbuena has served as vice president for information technology and strategic planning at the Community College of Southern Nevada where he oversaw a budget of $5 million. There he and his team serviced a clientele of 37,000 network users campus-wide and remotely, which included all institutional areas. Before joining the Community College of Southern Nevada, he served as executive director for information technology at Franciscan University where he won supervisor of the year.

Dr. Valbuena is a seasoned manager who is passionate about quality services to customers and disciplined in adhering to feasible yet aggressive timelines in the delivery of results. He believes to transform higher education depends on professional development, business analysis and innovation under a student-centered philosophy. Dr. Valbuena said, “Technology needs to be a pillar for faculty by rendering opportunities that enable them to manage instruction and conduct research and by providing effective and friendly content-authoring systems as well as tools for course delivery in and outside the classroom.”
