Student wins big at New York conference

Posted By: Jehan Bunch on November 27, 2006 TSU student William F. Busch III received first place honors and a HP laptop computer at the 6th annual Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute, held in New York Oct. 20-23. Busch, a senior e-business/supply chain management major from St. Louis, attended the conference with 10 other TSU students including: Carroll Wesson, sophomore, psychology, Jackson, Tenn.; Jeralyn Powell, junior, biological science, Memphis; Jerry Johnson, junior, accounting, Memphis; Jayson Hill, junior, accounting, Atlanta; Xandelyn Wright, junior, elementary education, Houston; Marsheila Joy Hayes, junior, speech communications, Memphis; Ayodeji Olojo, senior, e-business/supply chain, Detroit; Sherrae M. Hayes, junior, speech communications, Cleveland; Fredrica Piphus, junior, psychology, Cincinnati; and, Michael E. Johnson Jr., Sophomore, political science, Nashville. "It was slightly unexpected," said Busch, referring to his win. "I captured the fact that there is nothing in society that we do that doesn't require technology." Busch won the Institute's essay contest for two-page essay addressing the theme "How technology can be better used to enhance their development as global leaders." "Being able to attend the Institute and be recognized speaks huge volumes not only about me, but about the capabilities of TSU students," Busch said, while adding that he and his fellow TSU students were among over 500 other students from public historically black colleges. The Institute, hosted by the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund (TMSF), is an annual three-day leadership-training conference for TMSF Scholarship recipients and its 47 member institutions, according to www.thurgoodmarshallscholarshipfund.org. During the Institute, students were provided with interview opportunities with corporate partners and are honored at an awards gala ceremony. "We view this opportunity as one of the most important experiences in the leadership developing of our students at the University," said William Latham, associate director of the University Honors Program. In addition to leadership training students were involved with workshops on career planning, interviewing skills, and resume writing, as well as financial and credit management workshops. "The(Institute) this year was phenomenal," said Ayodeji Olojo, who is also TSU's student government association president. "Having experienced the conference for two consecutive years, I could visibly see a large increase in student participation and corporate sponsorship." "The conference was very benefically for me because it gave me the opportunity to network and connects with professionals from every industry and background," he added. "This conference is the best leadership conference I have attended in my collegiate history." If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
