Posted By: Jehan Bunch on December 18, 2006 OFFICE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY DURHAM, N.C. 27707 DECEMBER 18, 2006 CONTACT: Sharon Saunders Pamela Tolson (919) 530-6295 SUMMIT AT NCCU HIGHLIGHTS HIP-HOP INDUSTRY DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will sponsor the NCCU Hip-Hop Music Summit February 9-10, 2007, with panelists from MTV, Sirius Satellite Radio, Essence Magazine, Allhiphop.com and many more. “I think this is a wonderful opportunity for our students to network with industry professionals,” said Kawachi Clemons, co-chair of the NCCU Hip-Hop Planning Committee. “The addition of a second day gives us the opportunity to address more issues and a greater diversity of participants.” The summit, in its second year, will include a film festival, old school hip-hop concert, and curriculum development seminars for primary and secondary teachers. In addition to these activities, a series of events are planned the week of Feb. 5 leading up to the summit including a Spoken Word Slam, DJ Competition, Producer Competition and Talent Showcase in which proceeds will go a local charity. “We are really excited about what we have planned for the students in the region,” said Sherise Malachi, co-chair of the NCCU Summit Planning Committee and a 2001 graduate of NCCU. “We have big names in the music, fashion and publishing industry coming to NCCU’s campus to discuss all facets of the hip-hop industry. We believe the summit will be informative, enlightening and entertaining.” The summit is designed to assess the state of Hip-Hop in the African American community and provide area college students with a greater understanding of the new developments in the industry and how to break into the business. The summit is a part of NCCU’s Hip-Hop Initiative, which has five components, Eagle Records, the Hip-Hop Summit, Continuing Education Programs, NCCU RAP and a course offered at NCCU, “Hip-Hop in Context.” The Hip-Hop Initiative was created by the university to offer a scholarly approach to the music form that university officials believe could provide new opportunities to students interested in working in the industry. The university also is hoping that the initiative can have a positive influence on the industry. Two general sessions and five concurrent sessions are planned as well as a networking session. Some of the topics include “Men and Women: The Fight for Power in the Music Industry,” “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” “The Church and Hip-Hop,” “Handling your Business, Legal and Financial Issues in Entertainment.” The summit is open to the general public. Registration is limited to 700. Students from NCCU, Duke University, North Carolina A&T State University, N.C. State University, Saint Augustine’s College, Shaw University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are encouraged to register.
