A Poem For Black History Month

Posted By: L D Horne on January 17, 2007 Untitled It’s funny how some claim That we are useless and their resolves remain To conclude that we do not contribute to humankind But without us, life would be uneasy you will find Think what it’d be like if those items that make life easy Were never invented and you will see That we too improved the livelihood of this planet and our nation It would be an unusual day, how different would be our situation On those hot days when we seek refuge from the heat Thank Frederick Jones for developing the A/C Or you’d have to climb up fifty stairs or greater If Alexander Mills had not invented the elevator We preserve food and medication Well, we can thank J. Standard for refrigeration There are items in everyday sight Like Garrett Morgan’s traffic light For certain most of you would moan If Henry T. Sampson had not invented the cell phone If you ride your bike to school, obey the traffic signals Eat ice cream or sharpen your pencils Remember by African Americans were they created Think about how we made life less complicated I’m not saying that I can perform open heart surgery Because Charles Drew looks like me Just shutting down the doubters putting ignorance to conclusion By highlighting “only a few” of our contributions If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
