FBI special agent Raymond Oglesby states “The goal of this partnership is to change people’s perspective of the FBI. The FBI is for everyone and we need more minorities to apply.” Under the direction of Dr. Sudhir Tandon, assistant professor and department head for management and marketing and Wayne Ballentine, adjunct professor, the spring 2007 Distribution Management undergraduate class at PVAMU developed a customized marketing campaign for the FBI through the university’s service-learning initiative. “I believe that being this close to graduation…this project prepared me for the real world. I also believe it allowed me to be in a ‘real’ work environment. We had real deadlines and a real boss breathing down our necks to accomplish everything,” comments Troy Charleston, a senior marketing major whose role in the project was to act as department head for Implementation and Development for the mock FBI Campaign. Throughout the semester, students engaged in cooperative dialogues with the community, faculty members in the College of Business and fellow students. To address the FBI’s concern for diversity and need for expanded marketing goals, PVAMU students organized and hosted a “Customize Your Career” Fair, an informational seminar session and designed promotional materials that the FBI will soon consider using on a national scale. Determinations will take place once FBI representatives hear final course presentations at semester’s end. While providing the FBI with several feasible marketing initiatives and creative collaborations to market its services in an expanded capacity, PVAMU students gained valuable skills that can be applied to their chosen profession in support of their traditional class room instruction.
