The Glory Field

Posted By: Kenneth Kelly on July 20, 2007

A lot of people ask me why I allude to slavery whenever I bring up problems of the Black community. The answer is simple; Slavery is at the root of all problems of people of African descent. For instance, when you hear somebody say, "I'm going to shop at JC Penneys," you might say, "You know that corner store up the street got the same stuff for cheaper," and the other persons returns, "I don't trust them niggas." It's a classic example of what slavery has done to our people. In Africa and early Europe, Black people thrived by relying on other black people but because of the massa teaching us to distrust each other, we world rather give money to another community than our own. Examples like this led me to write the song, Still a Slave, but some people still don't get it so I'ma spell it out:

Modern Day Slavery:

The Boats= Squad Cars and Box Chevys
Just like in the Trans-Atlantic trade, once you see that squad car, you know the man is coming with the guns and chains, so you run the other way. Right when you think you got away by running to the dope spot, that boy in the box Chevy rat you out so that he can get more money. This is the beginning of the dehumanizing process. First, you're searched and stripped of everything you had to remember your free days, then you're chained, and lastly, you get talked down to and dehumanized the whole way to the jailhouse.

The Chesapeake= The Hood/Ghetto
If you remember from slave days, the Chesapeake was where they grew rice, corn, and tobacco. While the conditions were still horrible, they were still better off than those slaves in the cotton fields. It's no different today. In the hoods and ghettoes of America, conditions are horrible; people are living in poverty, there is lots of crime and corruption, and people die everyday but, at least they're not in jail. Instead of tobacco, the slaves push rocks for the massa and help to further corrupt the minds of their own people. Because of the horrible education systems, the only ways out of the hood are through sports and entertainment. Very seldomly does anyone escape the hood by another route.

The Deep South= The Pen
Conditions in jail are far worse than conditions in the street. In the pen, slaves are demoralized and beaten everyday. Rape, murder, and torture are very common in the pen.

Just like the old cotton kingdom, slaves outnumber masters and, therefore, the masters must use more brute force than those in the Chesapeake. In the pen, slave holders incite riots, rape women and beat the men all day long and, when they gte tired, they use their house niggas (snitches) to do their dirty work. Also like the old south, it is nearly impossible to escape. Those that are in the system are in it for life, and those that are not are kidnapped and baited into the system.

The Massa= The Politician
He who feeds you controls you. In this case, politicians feed us. Even Black people who are well off can relate to the rule of deceitful politicians: they promise new roads, housing and schooling while delivering nothing. All the politicians want is for us to trust them and discredit everybody else so that we work loyally and respectfully for them so they can run a functioning company/country. Meanwhile, we are stuck saying, "Yessir, Boss, right away."

The Overseer= The Pig
The overseer has always been a financially needy enforcer of the massa's word. If the slaves get out of line, it is the overseer's job to whip them back into shape. In slave days, the overseer was a poor white man who felt superior to the slaves but also feared them without a weapon. Pigs are no different. If they strapped and you aint, they big. If yall both strapped, they call in reinforcements. If neither of yall are strapped, they call in reinforcements cuz they know they aint ready to bang.

The Driver= D-Boys and Snitches
In slave days, the driver was always a Black man who whipped the other slaves to avoid getting his own ass beat. In today's slavery, people pushing drugs are doing nothing but poisoning their own community and committing mental homocide against all of their peers. Because of this, and their own lust for money, they chop down anybody standing in their way and, because of their surroundings, its typically always a Black person that they're chopping. In a similar light, snitches are usually D-Boys and murderers who have been caught in the act. In order to stay away from the pen, they tell on others that have been breaking the law and get them sent away. In exchange for capturing a new slave in the pen, snitches are allowed to maintain their "freedom."

Trust, I have plenty more direct comparisons, but I don't want anybody to lose attention so I'll save them, but just from these it is clear to see that the shackles just got switched from our ankles to our minds.
