NAIA honors Fugate and Richardson

For immediate release . . . July 31, 2007

NEW ORLEANS — Men's tennis players Thomas Fugate and Terry Richardson of Xavier University of Louisiana have been selected Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

Fugate and Richardson were among 70 NAIA men's tennis players — and the only ones from the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference — honored for their academic and athletic accomplishments.

Fugate, from Fairport, N.Y. (Fairport High School), was 9-9 in singles and 13-7 in doubles for the Gold Rush in 2007, his senior season. He was All-GCAC at No. 6 singles and at No. 3 doubles and was a first-team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

In 2005 he was selected an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete. Fugate graduated in May as a biology/pre-med major and has been accepted into medical school at the University of Rochester.

Richardson, from Ellenwood, Ga. (Stockbridge High School), was 9-10 in singles and 12-7 in doubles. He was the GCAC Player of the Year, second-team All-Louisiana and a second-team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

Nominees for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete teams must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 and earned at least junior class standing. Richardson, a biology major, was a junior academically, but 2007 was his sophomore tennis season.

Xavier was 12-10 in 2007, won the GCAC Tournament and ranked 25th in the final NAIA national poll.
