I'm glad to see this story told. It is something that is overlooked in history. I've had the opportunity to find out about this on my own by chance. Black jockeys were well known and very highly respected throughout the history of the sport. Especially during the 1800s when Blacks were expert horse trainers and breeders from learning this trade through slavery or their personal livelihood. You should consider reaching out to HBCUs with your project, they would be very supportive. In fact, Hampton University recently established an equestrian program. Jonathan thanks for the response. Ironically, the Reginald Lewis Museum directed us to Hampton and know that we are following up with them. Please let all you know about our site as we plan to deal with the history of this from the slave trade through and after the Jim Crow era. Stay tuned for updates to the site coming this weekend on exhibition stops and more research information. Thanks.
