Young Women and Breast Cancer Awareness! My Story.

Posted By: Nikkee Williams-McGainey on August 27, 2007 Well.... Here is my story: In September 2006 I went into my doctor's office for my yearly annual physical, following the birth of my last child. I had some complictions during the birth which resulted in a partial hysterectomy and two filters from a blood clot. Side note: child birth is no joke ladies. Anyway, to my point, at the check up the doctor recommended a mammogram amongst a list of other tests to ensure my optimal health. I appreciated it and made my appts. Well, i am only 36 and usually women are not sent for mammograms until age 40 because these are childbearing years and the test does expose a large amount of radiation to the body. With no history in my family of any Cancer, to my knowledge, I go and have my mammogram. I am called back and diagnosed with Stage 0- in situ Breast Cancer!! Meaning it was only located in the milk ducts and had not move into any othe parts of my body. Who would have known! No lump, no pain, no history. But God was on my side diagnosing me early enough to do something about it and save my life! I want to make all women aware of the importance in EARLY detection. Be aware of your body, seek advice from your doctor, routine check ups...etc. Listen to the voice of God always. I had my surgery 5mo. later electing for a double masectomy because I have two small kids whom I plan to be around with for a lot longer than this if it is up to me. I am now doing well, no Chemo., and no treatments. My Husband is a trooper there every step of the way, What a Great Man!
