BLACK POPES, *read for ino*

BLACK POPES, *read for ino*
Posted By: on May 09, 2005

Since the passing of the pope, alot of people, before the new one was picked, that Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigerain as being the first black pope. Even though he was not chosen as the successor, There has been three black popes that have headed the Vatican since Jesus' death. They even made significant contributions, but racism has obviously marginialized their contributions to the point of even forgetting that they existed.

They were:

Pope Victor I (A.D. 186-187)
Pope Miltiades (A.D. 311-314)
Pope St. Gelasius (A.D. 492-496)

Victor I, the 15th pope and the reason Easter Day is celebrated universally on Sunday.

An African native, Victor I served during the reign of Emperor Septimus Severus, also a black African and one of several African emperors that led the Roman Empire.

Miltiades, the 32nd pope, is remembered as the Vatican leader who led the church to final victory over the roman Empire. Though he ruled the church for a mere three years, Miltiades oversaw one of history's most dramatic turning points - the coming of Roman Emperor Constantine and his conversion to Christianity in A.D. 313. Miltiades is credited with gaining approval from Emperor Constantine that all Christians would be free to worship without fear of reprisal or persecution.

Gelasius I, the 49th pope, was born in Rome of African parents, assuming leadership of the Vatican in A.D. 492. "Intelligent and energetic, Gelasius I knew what steps he should take to establish a secure future for the church," Edward Scobie, author of African Presence in Early Europe, wrote of the third African pope.

The bible says, 'You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.' It's not supposed to be one set of lies for white people and one set of truth for black people.

Arinze would've made a great contribution to Catholocism, and I hate he wasn't elected to that particular post. If Cardinal Francis Arinze had been elected pope, this would simply reflect a Christian reality, Roman Catholic or otherwise. Africa has become Christianity's powerhouse. there are more English-speaking Catholics in Africa than in all the other continents put together. Arinze personally symbolizes this growth. In his less than 20 years as archbishop of Onitsha, the number of Catholics in his diocese increased 65 percent. When Arinze was consecrated bishop in 1965, he was the world's youngest at the time (32 years old.) A convert to Catholicism, he was brought up to worship the deities of the Ibo people. Arinze ranks among the world's top experts on interfaith dialogues, especially with Muslims with whom Christians in Nigeria live at times in fierce confrontation.

Until his recent appointment as prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship, Arinze had served as president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue since 1984. Much of his scholarly work concerned non-Christian faiths. His doctoral dissertation focused on Sacrifice in Ibo Religion.
At 71, Arinze would've been the perfect age for a pope. And he is vigorous enough to exercise what seems to have become the mission of Africans: preaching the Gospel to an increasingly confused world.
