My Testimony "A VOICE OF FAITH"
|
Posted By: LTanya Taylor on October 15, 2007 A VOICE OF FAITH” By L’Tanya Taylor My first test of Faith came in January 2004 after having worked for a financial institution for over ten years, upon arriving to work I was called into the office to be told that I was no longer employed. As anyone who has experienced this, the news was devastating and shocking especially to someone who was always committed to professional excellence. However, I held my head up and walked out knowing that God was on my side and that by his grace I would be OK. After a year and a half of searching for employment, I lost my health care and depleted all of my savings. You never think that when you are at your lowest moment, things could get any worse. In April 2005, I noticed a lump on my left breast. With no health insurance or any financial resources I had nothing to rely on but my faith in GOD, so I began to pray for an answer. Then in August 2005 my Angel appeared. A family friend told me about the Karmanos Cancer Institute, a program set up to help unemployed, uninsured women 40 and over. After initial testing, I was diagnosed with 3rd stage Breast Cancer in my left breast and lymph nodes. At this time all I could think about was the additional burden I would have to place on my mom who had already made maximum sacrifices to help me. During my year and a half of unemployment it was my mom who was my rock. There were many days of tears as I watched my mom lose her home and file for bankruptcy just to take care of her and me on a fixed income. Yet, she never complained nor made me feel guilty. Now I needed her again as my sole supporter of my battle with Breast Cancer. Without hesitation she never missed an appointment or Chemo treatment. It was my mom who stayed with me during the days when my white blood count was so low I had to isolate myself. It was my mom who picked up my medication, cooked my meals, and offered an encouraging word on my worst days. With my mom’s strength along with GOD’s grace and mercy, my church family, my immediate family, and friends, I have been able to have the courage to withstand a hysterectomy, unemployment, and cancer. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” It is this verse that I have mediated on daily and as a result have been able to maintain a positive attitude from day one. No, I never cried nor lowered my baldhead in self-pity. Even though I have gone through surgery, I wear my scarves with pride and conviction. Being the only person in my family to ever be diagnosed with breast cancer, I have never questioned “Why me?” Through the hair loss, pains, fatigue, weight loss, nausea, swelling, fevers and chills. I know GOD has a beautiful plan for my life and I intend to fulfill that plan. Today, I’m 3 years cancer free. I know that GOD’s amazing grace has brought me through. Yes, I am a survivor. I look “good” and I feel “great.” May my story encourage any anyone who may be going through this transition to lift their voice and praise GOD for all of his goodness. As Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.” ________________________________________ If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
