Why I Love HBCUs
|
Posted By: Karenja K. Saunders on May 11, 2005 Seeing that this is my very first blog, someone's probably done the same topic, but I'm hoping someone shares the same reasons as me. My elementary and secondary school days were spent in majority white schools, so few people could identify with me. Setting foot on an HBCU was (almost) a culture shock yet a wonderful growing experience for me. Be sure to post your reasons too! The familial atmosphere (especially at B-CC). I came from a high school where few blacks rarely cared to speak to you, let alone care about how you were doing. Where else can I walk around and feel like almost everyone is a "cuzzin" and get hugs like they haven't seen you in ages (and you just saw them yesterday)? You have a few "cuzzins" that mess up the party, but for the most part, everyone's cool. The school spirit. It's almost indescribable, but it's so contagious. I had no school spirit in high school, didn't think I'd have any when I got to college, but I've turned out to be one of the crunkest shorties on campus. lol The band. It's the pride of each school. Shout out to the GREATEST band on earth, the Bethune-Cookman College Marching Wildcats! Shout outs to all the other wonderful bands too. Just had to take the time to shout out one of the main factors contributing to the school spirit. :-) The Battle(s) of the Bands-- Shout out to Honda and all the other corporations who recognize and showcase the talented groups who are the pride of our schools. There's nothing like being able to go support your band as it shows up and shows out on the field, in front of all other spectators. Homecoming. Just another reason to get decked out and still show school spirit. It ain't nothin' but a big ol' family reunion. Be for real. Football and Basketball games (well, all of the HBCU sports, actually). Who needs Division I sports? Y'all've seen 'em all on t.v. Need I say more? The Classics. No disrespect to all the other classics, but I'm sure Wildcats and Rattlers will tell you that the Florida Classic is the BEST classic to go to! For real though, the ones I've been to over the years (Bayou, Gulf Coast, Turkey Day, Magic City, and FL) each have different elements that make them unique, and I wouldn't mind going back to the others. The teams, the bands, the Greeks, the crazy and older alumni, etc. make it all worth while. The camraderie/friendly rivalries between each other. I don't know about y'all, but it's great when you meet other people attending/who've attended an HBCU because you feel a connection. You can joke about each other's school and still have repsect for each other and his/her institution. I've met so many great folks from FAMU, and we have wonderful relationships, but when it's Classic time, we're damn near enemies for that whole weekend. It's almost like gang warfare. BCR/Spring Bling, Kappa Beach Party, (R.I.P.) Freak Nik, etc.. Just more reasons for all of us to join together and a have a family affair. The Understanding. Finding out that there are others just like you, who are going through (or have been through) what you're going through makes college easier. I've got more reasons, but I think Blogs are supposed to be short. Post some of your reasons! If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
