Posted By: Jon C. on November 15, 2007 Yesterday, I was reading a magazine article about kids whose behavior doesn’t seem “normal”. For whatever reason, these are the kids that stand out in the crowd. Instead of blending in, from the earliest age they seem to march to their own drum. We all know the type - while the other 19 kids in the kindergarten class are sitting in a neat row singing “Old MacDonald”, he’s the other one who is busy exploring the classroom, looking curiously at the birds in the window, or disassembling one of the toys to see how it works. Society has spent, and wasted, countless millions of dollars trying to “cure” these unique personalities with therapy and medication, and developing complex medical terminologies to describe them without success. Perhaps this says more about our society, than it does about the children? Do we, as a civilization, value individuality, curiosity, and creativity, or just mindless compliance? Are we quietly forcing our Albert Einsteins, George Washington Carvers, and Thomas Edisons into obscurity? Thankfully for our society, somebody saw their potential, and encouraged them to explore and think big. Don’t forget that history is still being made, even today, and you could be the one making it. Your ideas will always be criticized, but the real leaders continue to move forward. Decide today that your voice will always be heard, whether the world agrees with you or not.
