Hampton University Alumnus, Daryl L. Pickens, Launches DLP Accessories Website!
Posted By: on November 25, 2007

Let’s face it! We’ve all had moments where we go out and buy that expensive ‘divalicious’ dress that we really cannot afford. Am I right ladies? Have you ever wondered if guys do the same thing? Let‘s ask them. Guys, haven’t you bought a new sharp-looking suit knowing that you can’t afford it? I’m not talking buying a new garment every now and then, I mean EVERY time something comes up we rush out to buy something new. Oh, yes, we’re looking great, but we’re going broke in the process! Everyone knows that most college students don’t have much money, right? So, here’s an idea:

Why buy a new suit, when you can make the old suit look new. How? ACCESSORIZE!

You can create a whole new-like wardrobe just by adding the right accessories to your old wardrobe. Accessorizing is the rave even among high fashion celebrities. A new tie, hat, handbag or shoes can be all that you need to maintain that sought after ‘designer’ look.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Hampton University Alumnus, Daryl L. Pickens, a successful businessman and long-time friend, who has launched an online store that actually offers those who have panache ‘real’ designer accessories at affordable prices.

Q: Daryl, would you, please, tell our readers a little bit about yourself including your educational background?

A: I graduated from Hampton University in 1990 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After brief stints with Johnson & Johnson and Mobil Oil, I became a Math teacher. As an educator I train young minds…being able to give back in this way, through education, has been truly rewarding. Teaching is an important part of my life within the classroom. I’m also involved in volunteer activities outside of the classroom that sharpen my teaching skills, while helping me to make sure of the more important things in life. Needless to say I’m very busy.

Q: Of course. What made you decide to attend Hampton University?

A: My father, mother, sister, grandmother and other family members attended Hampton University. Albeit, a Hampton education is tradition in my family, it was not a foregone conclusion for me. While growing up I had opportunity to visit Hampton with my parents, so Hampton was not new to me. I did visit other HBCUs during high school, but it was definitely the Hampton Orientation Weekend for prospective freshmen that really impressed me. I had so much fun and enjoyed the beautiful campus…that’s when it became clear to me that Hampton was for me.

Q: Hmmm…Several generations attended Hampton…truly a Hampton Legacy…that’s most impressive. Do you feel that your Hampton education aided you in your many accomplishments?

A: Yes, I feel it [a Hampton education] has given me opportunity to experience many things and learn many invaluable lessons that I have been able to use in my personal and secular pursuits.

Q: Daryl, I’ve known you for about, what, 10 years? And you have always been style conscious, a very well-dressed man. Can we surmise that your sense of style accounts, in part, for your decision to create DLP Accessories?

A: [Smiling] I would say that is partially true, though the driving force behind the creation was to simply have scheduling freedom for other activities.

Q: I’m very impressed with DLP Accessories. I think it’s a fabulous idea to keep us well-dressed for less. Your website is: http://www.dlpaccessories.com, correct? Can you tell us what the benefits are to shopping at DLP Accessories?

A: Yes, my website is: http://www.dlpaccessories.com. I would say the benefits of shopping on my website are our high quality merchandise and our very reasonable prices. As you mentioned at the outset, it is really about being a smart spender not a large spender. A few high quality accessories can greatly add, diversify and elevate ones’ clothing. This is so important because you really never get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression, so why not do it right the 1st time.

Q: Very well stated. In conclusion, Daryl, what advice would you offer HBCUConnect.com readers who have an entrepreneurial spirit?

A: Learn from others, but allow your unique and positive qualities to point you in a specific direction. Once you have that direction, start moving and remember ANY progress in that direction is progress. Also, keep in mind that what works for someone else may not work for you and vice-versa. Of course, the goal is “success”, but the definition varies for each person. Find out what it means to you. For me it really is not about fortune and fame, but more about the freedom I’m afforded to pursue things that result in genuine happiness.

Daryl, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. Each time we get to chat I learn something new about you. Your focus and balance have always impressed me. Thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak about your new business venture. I wish you much success with DLP Accessories and continued joy in your personal pursuits. I’m sure that HBCUConnect.com readers will have fun while shopping online for terrific designer accessories!

Thank you, Tressia, so much for your time…it’s always good to talk with you…and I wish you continued success in your endeavors.

Remember, folk, the next time you think you need that new suit or new dress all you REALLY need is the right accessories from DLP Accessories!

So, what are you waiting for? You’re already online. Why not visit Daryl’s website right now for great gift ideas?

Always,
Tressia
