Posted By: Laci Simmons on May 12, 2005 As history shows us that the orgininal purpose for HBCUs were for freed men slaves and to further educate black women. Knowing that do you feel that the black men and women back in the early 1760's worked in vain to provide us with a good education considering the fact that the ratio of black college drop outs are very high, 1 out of 10 college freshmen fail their 1st semester, white students are now enrolling into hbcus, and a lot of young black students do not further their education. I dont think that the work was in vain. I think some individuals drop out b/c tuition is expensive and the classes and professors expect so much of them, they arent use to that...In high school I know my teachers didnt care what I did all they wanted was my respect and my work. Alot of HBCU's started out private and some of them still are and its hard when you attend a school that isnt receiving any money from the state. Some students drop out because they feel that all this work isnt necessary for a degree..Some students arent receiving good financial aid packages, some probably cant take out more than 1 loan. I commend the pioneers who set the paths for us so that we can attend schools just for us....I attend B-CC and I really didnt know too much about Mary McLeod Bethune so I did my own reasearch on her and she is a phenominal woman....she desired her people to be educated when no one else believed in her or had faith in her.....Instead of students talking down on their school I believe that we all need to bring unity on our campus and show people that we are more than just an HBCU we are just as good as a STATE school personally I believe we are better...Where else can you get the feeling of your professors taking time out and getting on you for not doing what you are suppose to do....So...I dont know if I answered the question but then again I dont know if you see where I am coming from...Like you said its an opnion and this is my opinion. Another aspect is I commend HBCU's because they do know what (we) are going through and the average GPA's we all have set in high school now the (Ivey League HBCU's have GPA's and SAT/ACT scores that are high) but they are still willing to work with individuals who didnt test so well but have done good academically in high school there are even HBCU programs that let students in if they have 2.0's and have little incentive programs for them to pull up their GPA's so that their college academic experience is better than the high school academic experience. "HBCU's the root of the black community". We must stand by our institutions, because no one else will. We must find ways to decrease the black college dropout rate, because we must maintain the legacy that our founding fathers have created for us. So I believe that it is our job to make sure our Colleges and Universities fulfill their true missions.

Giving money is key for academics. We also need to implement support systems to encourage students to stay in.
